No it's an ethnicity.

It's complicated, and the categories that make sense to in today's discourse in America don't apply. We are an ancestral group with an ancestral religion. That's just different from skin color or which church.

Whoopi Goldberg is one of the world's greatest comedians. She is not a public intellectual. It's good that she revealed a common misconception so we can talk about it. But no, she doesn't actually know what she's talking about here and brings no historical perspective to the table.

Are you Jewish? Because no one I know who is Jewish thinks being Jewish is "just a religion." And certainly, none of the antisemites throughout history have considered Judaism/being jewish "just a religion.

So yes, Judaism is a religion and it is much much more. It is a culture, and a genetic community -- it's why I and other Ashkenazi Jews are tested for certain genetic issues when we get pregnant. Many, many Jews are not religious AT ALL and considered themselves Jewish.

Certainly, when antisemites come for us, they are rarely coming on the basis of our religion.

I’m Jewish. I’m also agnostic. But you test my blood and I’m a carrier of things that are directly tied to my heritage as a Jew (Tay-Sachs). So yea, it’s more than a religion.

There are different types of Jews. The first would be Azkhenazi. The second maybe Sephardic or another branch. Still Jews. Still tied by bloodlines.

Not the PP, but I think if you were to ask any rabbi this question they would say that Judaism is first and foremost a religion that has a strong ethnic identity and a biological inheritance (hence the bloodline to the mother).

Well I have a white friend who married an African American and raise their children in the African American culture (Kwanzaa, etc). That happens all the time with different races. It's called an interracial relationship.

I’m African American aka black and Kwanzaa isn’t part of my culture or any black people I know.
