Biden's VP?

Who’s we? Whitmer will be the VP.

I like Whitmer very much, but the calls for a WOC would be difficult to ignore.

Black or I don’t vote. Period!

We’ve had a black president but never a woman in the WH and the first one *must* be black regardless of qualifications or demographic strategy? Okay then.

We need to focus on getting more WOC into elected positions overall. It doesn’t necessarily have to be VP this time- elect more WOC as mayors, governors, reps, and senators so that there is a strong bench to choose from.

There are plenty of AA female mayors.

6 of America's most successful, populous, and economic powerhouse cities are run by them.

That's great, but we need more governors and senators as well. Those are the benches from which VP candidates are traditionally drawn. In terms of VP prospects, Biden is a bit hamstrung by the tiny pool of WOC in those positions. I like Lance Bottoms and Abrams but do not think they're qualified to be VP with such an old incoming president (I did not think Pete Buttigieg was qualified either). I'm skeptical of Harris, with less than a term in the Senate and difficulty articulating policy positions. Val Demings is great, but has limited national and zero foreign policy experience. Susan Rice is the only one truly qualified to be VP, but is untested politically plus the Benghazi baggage. Warren and Klobuchar are the most qualified after Rice, but probably won't be picked for several reasons. Lujan Grisham is reasonably qualified, but few know who she is. I would say Duckworth and Whitmer are on the cusp of being qualified, though Whitmer's shown she handles political crises well. In short, there's no perfect VP pick, I'm just not sure what should give.

Agree, they're terrific. That doesn't make them appropriate VP candidates for a 78 year old president.

It helps to also have a cabinet with diversity, not just black, especially if the VP is Warren or Whitmer.

Didn't Trump put out a list of candidates for SCOTUS during the campaign as a way to reassure conservatives who might be reluctant to vote for him?

If Biden's preferred pick turns out to be white, he could offer a list of black women from which he'd select AG or the next SCOTUS candidate. Those two positions would have more influence on racial matters than a VP.

Yes, if he picks a white VP I think he'll basically have to present his cabinet wish list as well, which could well include Harris for AG, Rice for Sec of State, and possibly Lance Bottoms and Abrams in other positions. He'll have to reiterate his commitment to an AA woman Supreme Court justice nominee as well. I'm confident his cabinet will be powerful and diverse, even if he decides to go with Warren or Whitmer for VP. In short, black women will make strides in his administration, even if not as VP this time. But we'll see, too soon to tell. Even though I've been a long-time Warren supporter, I keep coming back to Whitmer as someone who is just plain likable and seems to be a talented retail politician with good crossover appeal. I'll wait to see what the next two months hold.

Agree with this. We need to focus on winning this election and having a reasonably qualified VP to back Biden up. Those who say VP has to be a WOC or else are losing sight of the big picture. After recent events, anyone who pouts and stays home and lets Trump win again, well, I don’t know what to tell you. We need to get more women in general and WOC in particular in top leadership roles. We need to work from the ground up.
