You realize that after the war, Phillips would've been treated like crap like all military was. Many of you don't know this, but after Vietnam until late in the Reagan presidency, veterans were discriminated against and not honored and respected like they are today. So Philips would've suffered from that too.

A lot of the anti-Veteran stories are just myths. "[A] 1971 Harris Poll survey that found that 99 percent of veterans said their reception from friends and family had been friendly, and 94 percent said their reception from age-group peers, the population most likely to have included the spitters, was friendly. A follow-up poll, conducted in 1979 for the Veterans Administration (now the Department of Veterans Affairs), reported that former antiwar activists had warmer feelings toward Vietnam veterans than toward congressional leaders or even their erstwhile fellow travelers in the movement."

. . .
"The “war at home” phrase captured the idea that the war had been lost on the home front. It was a story line promulgated by Hollywood within which veteran disparagement became a kind of “war story,” a way of credentialing the warrior bona fides of veterans who may have felt insecure about their service in Vietnam. In “First Blood,” the inaugural Rambo film, the protagonist, John Rambo, flashes back to “those maggots at the airport, spittin’, callin’ us baby killers and all kinds of vile crap.” The series supported the idea that decisions in Washington had hamstrung military operations. “Apocalypse Now” fed outright conspiracy theories that the C.I.A.’s secret war run from Washington had undercut the military mission. “Coming Home” and “Hamburger Hill” played on male fears of unfaithful wives and girlfriends, a story line hinting that female perfidy and the feminist subversion of warrior morale had cost us victory."

No, it's not a myth. I lived it. I grew up in San Diego in the 70's in an area with a lot Navy and Marine families. The marines were easy to spot, with their short haircuts. They were not treated with respect. Our next door neighbor was a somewhat well-known commander of a Navy ship - his house was egged, cars vandalized, people would drive by the house in the middle of the night yelling things. They had to move away and hide to get away from it.

And... this mindset was driving by the protesting, anti-war, hate-filled "hippies" of that time.

Definitely not a myth. DH was in grad school at a prestigious university at that time. This was between tours in Vietnam--and, yes, believe it or not, the Army sent high achieving officers to grad school. DH said there was definitely an anti-war bias there and that they were advised to only wear civilian clothes. SDS people approached a group of these military grad students one time and a professor pulled them into his office to defuse the situation. There were marches against the war frequently and some were pretty obnoxious. The protesters were definitely looking for a fight.

It is absurd to expect teenagers to not rape girls!

ABSURD I TELL YOU!

When I see post like this, I smell desperation. The whole "these boys mocked a Native American Vietnam Veteran" story has fallen apart.
You folks are grasping at something - anything - to vilify these students. Why? We know damn well why.
These are kids. Minors. And, you folks seem to think it is just fine to treat them like $hit and ruin the rest of their childhoods and, frankly, the rest of their lives.

Get a grip. Think about what you are doing. It is totally shameful.

Just a guess, but I bet you didn't say "he's just a kid" when Tamir Rice was murdered by a policeman.

If they had apologized for acting like asses, the whole thing would have gone away. Instead they doubled down on hate and that they are victims and that just puts it over the edge.

Nice try. The social media mob had already taken over.
Plus... they had nothing to apologize for. Mr Phillips, on the other hand..........

Not behaving like Christ directs them to behave. So they should probably leave the Catholic school that has failed to teach them that.

Just a guess, but I bet you weren't in the debate club at your school. Engaging in whataboutism will not win you a debate.

So now we know you didn't. YOu probably don't think it was terrible, either.

Why do you have such great sympathy for the 17 year olds you call minors but not for the 12 year old?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. We know your ultimate goal is to wipe Christian schools off the map. Good luck with that.

I feel most sorry for the smirk boy. He showed a lot of restraint, other than that slight smirk. And this all happened after the black hate group members shouted vile things at them AND after the NA guy got up in his face.

When push comes to shove, a 16-year-old boy could take a 63-year-old man. Yet the kid did nothing threatening nor even said anything.

Give me a break. The Haka cheer is not the same thing as a Tomahawk chop, which several of the boys were clearly doing in response to an indigenous person singing a traditional chant while beating a traditional drum.

Also the Haka cheer comes from a sacred war dance of the Maori people. Many find it very disrespectful that people who are not of Maori descent have adopted it for their sports.

It would be good if the boys were to meet with indigenous people to discuss cultural appropriation and what that means.

Also anyone who doesn't know in 2018 that white people should just avoid painting their face black for any reason must be living under a rock.

I'm not discussion blackface. That wasn't in evidence at this event so it isn't part of this discussion.

So the accusation has moved from: "100 boys surround elder, mock him" to "Elder walks up to boys who just finished doing a few school cheers i don't approve of, gets in their face, bangs on a drum, and several of the boys did a tomahawk chop while the rest are hopping, jumping and cheering to the drums, and the elder stares at a boy who refuses to look away?"

Pretty much. Isn't it just horrible? These kids should be jailed for such behavior. /s

There were other Christian kids there who behaved themselves despite being yelled at by the black Hebrews. Shouldn't Covington use them as a model?
