Sad kids have to live through this pandemic

It pisses me off people cannot cool it with their behavior to help keep our kids health and those who are vaccinated healthy. Unvaccinated in this area are not the issue and there are plenty of vaccinated cases so we need those not vaccinated to get vaccinated and everyone to cool it for a few months so we can try to beat this. AND, we need to get vaccines to other countries given US citizens feel the need to travel abroad and bring it back. Its not as simple as just getting unvaccinated vaccinated anymore.

It truly sucks. Some of us have kept our kids home for over a year and are easily looking at another year. At this point, we are not sending our kids back and have zero plan since we are not prepared to homeschool. Never in a million years would I have considered covid.

So, I blame all those traveling, dining out, having large parties, indoor activities, etc.

You are making the decision to not live life. My kids didn’t miss a day of school last year and are returning this year. They have play dates and we travel safely. They’ve barely noticed the blip. You are just passing on your anxiety.

I am making the decision that I don't want covid nor do I want my children to get it. You are why covid is spreading and don't complain when one of your kids gets very sick.

Midwest poster here— I got COVID in March. I had a cough, runny nose, and 8 hours of stomach upset. As a responsible human, I took a rapid test and since it was positive, took a PCR, also positive. Neither of my kids got it and we tested everyone 3 more times. Of course, we quarantined.

A huge number of people get COVID and it is like a bad cold. Not even the flu. Some people get it and die. But for children, it is a number smaller than flu, so why would we stop life for that? We have never done so before.

So many good lessons to teach your kids about behavior during a country crisis. Also, the bonus of more family time.

Jesus. Step out of your rich bubble some day, lady.

We are far from rich. You'd hate living in our house and lifestyle but we are appreciative of what we have. You should try it.

Same. I love how the angry howler monkey moms always resort to well, you must be RICH and PRIVILEGED and have a SUMMER HOME. Nope.

I know it is difficult for callus and smug people like you to understand, but some of us genuinely care about more than our own families, so our risk calculus was impacted by concern about public health, including the most medically vulnerable and those who, due to economic necessity, were unable to avoid exposure. Whether we were right or wrong, blaming people for acting out of concern for the greater good demonstrations your self-centeredness.

You are in a bubble regardless if whether you think you are rich or not. Get out of it.

I care a lot about public health, which is why I got vaccinated ASAP.

I don’t think the greater good ever required everyone to lock down past June 2020. At that point, you knew if you were vulnerable or not. We have never before asked the world to shut down because of medical vulnerability. Accommodating need not be this.

DP. I do not believe people who are arguing for continued school shutdowns and returns to DL are thinking about anyone other than themselves, and I don't think they've thought about anyone other than themselves for awhile. They certainly aren't thinking about the devastating harm done to the most vulnerable children. I don't buy that pro-DL people, especially now, are thinking about the greater good at all.

I love this! 1,500 people died yesterday alone, 630,000 Americans have died so far and yet PP is still doing this "bad cold" trope.

I don't think any sane person is actually pro shutting down schools. Children will not bear the brunt of this mess any longer since y'all couldn't be bothered to stop going to Disney world or Applebees.

oh spare me. your outdoor masking, forcing schools to close, and self-imposed isolation did nothing to help anything else. using Instacart doesn’t make you mother teresa.

exactly. and that’s the problem with the demographic trying to close schools again: they have a complete inability to think about the system as a whole and refuse to believe that their ideas are anything but perfect.

I was the PP and didn’t do any of those things, except as required. But we did curtail family in personal activities because we wanted school to be open (and thought they should be).

the fact is, it IS a bad cold (or flu) for the vast majority, especially if immunized. you need to wrap your head around that. we can’t cripple society for a disease mainly killing the people who chose not to vaccinate, and that numbers-wise is not that much riskier to kids than many other childhood diseases.

Covid never had the features of a disease that could be eradicated. No virus with an animal reservoir can be eradicated. The goal was to stay home to create fewer infections so most people would meet the vaccine before the virus. Somehow this notion that herd immunity could be reached and that eventually Covid would go away took hold, and it’s a hard idea to shake. It’s led to lots of blaming and moralizing about the spread of a virus, and it’s not helpful.

I understand that many here (including myself) spent more than a year staying home, believing that if we could avoid an infection until the vaccine was available, we would never get Covid. It was the reward for being responsible. Except, it turns out that the benefit of the vaccine is to reduce the odds of severe disease. We will all meet the virus, it’s just a question of whether we get the opportunity to be vaccinated first,
