Sad kids have to live through this pandemic

So many good lessons to teach your kids about behavior during a country crisis. Also, the bonus of more family time.

Many Private schools were open with masks all last year.

guys, this is actually where the school closing discourse is right now: “You shouldn’t complain about schools being closed - schools didn’t even exist in the 1800s!” this is a thing that “influencers” are disseminating right now in an attempt to get DCPS and other school systems to close.

Of course, our liberal school districts will use that to close! However, activities in rec centers did not exist until recently, nobody went to all summer camp until recently, nobody but the wealthy. Hence claiming that our kids are suffering bcs they didn't have community-based activities is ridiculous, bcs most kids don't have them even today and most of us didn't have them growing up. I certainly didn't.
You are conflating two different things. And I want school to open, I was against them being closed at all and I sure as heck don't understand why were they closed last school year, even if we can find some excuse for March 2020 closure.

It pisses me off people cannot cool it with their behavior to help keep our kids health and those who are vaccinated healthy. Unvaccinated in this area are not the issue and there are plenty of vaccinated cases so we need those not vaccinated to get vaccinated and everyone to cool it for a few months so we can try to beat this. AND, we need to get vaccines to other countries given US citizens feel the need to travel abroad and bring it back. Its not as simple as just getting unvaccinated vaccinated anymore.

It truly sucks. Some of us have kept our kids home for over a year and are easily looking at another year. At this point, we are not sending our kids back and have zero plan since we are not prepared to homeschool. Never in a million years would I have considered covid.

So, I blame all those traveling, dining out, having large parties, indoor activities, etc.

You are making the decision to not live life. My kids didn’t miss a day of school last year and are returning this year. They have play dates and we travel safely. They’ve barely noticed the blip. You are just passing on your anxiety.

We are far from rich. You'd hate living in our house and lifestyle but we are appreciative of what we have. You should try it.

I am making the decision that I don't want covid nor do I want my children to get it. You are why covid is spreading and don't complain when one of your kids gets very sick.

My kid has to wear a mask for a couple of years and the education may not be optimal.

This is nothing, nothing comparing to others. Also, it’s nothing comparing to what is waiting for them ahead- climate change catastrophes and natural resources scarcity. They need to toughen up.

It would be small potatoes comparatively if there were a point… but there isn’t actually any point to this. We’re basically closing schools and/or requiring children to wear masks all the time because we’re idiots. I’m sure your mother and grandmother wouldn’t brag about living with rations and bread lines if their governments were basically imposing those things just for fun. It’s simply asinine.

exactly. and I seriously doubt PP would say, “Oh, our grandparents lived with Stalin. Stop complaining about Trump!”

My child's grandparents did live with Stalin. American's today cannot make any sacrifices but that is their parents fault and it is their fault for what example they are teaching their kids so it will follow for another generation. Wearing masks to school is no big deal. We don't feel safe sending ours back, don't plan to and have zero plan on how they will get an education next year. Thanks to all those whose good time is more important than helping us send our kids back to school safely. The kids whose parents have been conservative with no travel, no eating out/shopping, no camps, very limited social in person are the kids suffering, which is not most of the kids here. And, our kids will continue to suffer because of the choices others make.

Honestly if you can’t tell the difference between covid and the gulag, that’s all on you.

I’m not sure how to explain this to you: the fact that certain things didn’t exist before does not mean that we can just take them away now with no impact. each time and place had its own fabric of social life and institutions. you may think summer camp is NBD; but to my only child with autism, it is a BIG deal.

Anyone "explaining" anything with emojis is not worth my reading the post. Bye.
But, to add to my post, activities were open last summer and all year long. OPEN! nobody's fault but your own if your kids were not in activities.

Last summer? As in 2020?

Everything was cancelled. At least in the non-insane areas of the country.

Really? So how was DS earning money and working full time in a tennis camp? In College Park?

NP. Believe me, I won’t. I am way more worried about the long-term effects of the NPIs than I am about my children getting a cold.

Similarly, it's likely the health impact of covid will continue for many years, probably for our lifetimes. In other words, what your kids had before is not coming back. I don't see why you should have to pretend otherwise. Mourn it, yes, but move on. The world has irrevocably changed.

Also, climate change impact is going to make people nostalgic for covid, so consider that your kids are lucky to not have the worst of that.

No. SImply no, the harm to education will not be generational. You are delusional and have no idea what causes a generational impact on anything. You are not "realistic" about anything, you simply are a person that thrives on tragedy and sees tragedy in everything. I hate to break it to you, but our American kids are not any worse than 3 years ago.

NP and I completely disagree PP. Do you even have kids? The isolation and lack of community based activities resulting from the pandemic have been harmful to the development of our kids. For younger children and adolescents, exposure to all types of people teaches essential skills such as communication, tolerance, conflict management, and community. Simply put, healthy individuals need to learn how to interact successfully with others, and the level of interaction necessary for healthy development has not been easy to replace for most families.

I’m as liberal as they come, but as a Florida resident and desantis hater, I’ve never been more grateful to live here. Because of the weather and many policies, our kids were not isolated at all over the last 17 months. Plenty of exposure to people, the community, parks, playgrounds, in person schools, and so far, no Covid.

I 100% agree that the level of isolation is your choice. But I think history will in a strange way, show that some red states were on the right side of handling some (not all) Covid-issues.

Amen. I have heard many Trump-hating democrats say that they would crawl over shards of glass to recall Gavin Newsom.

I hate Trump and what he stands for. But I hate this fascism and mass delusion just as much. Swing voters will swing.
