The NVSL's mask mandate is ignoring science about 1) outdoor transmission; 2) vaccinated people; 3)lack of susceptibility of kids. Its making a rule where they have zero knowledge or expertise. Our team requires volunteer hours- although I don't think they are really tracking them. But those volunteer hours can be fulfilled by bringing bags of ice, donating baked goods, doing pep rally stuff, working the snack bar- etc. As well as doing things on deck like stroke and turn and timing. Its already hard to get stroke and turn judges b/c they also have to go to training. Silly rules like this about masks just shrink their availability even more.

It seems trivial but it’s not—I’m not going to volunteer to stand on deck in the sweltering heat all day if I have to wear a mask—I’m fully vaccinated and I’m DONE with that.

Yes. I'm literally talking to these people on OUR team without masks, kids without masks being coached by coaches without a mask.

Any word on the vote?

did they put it off again?

One person tested positive for covid 29 in Fairfax County yesterday.

Covid 19, whoops.

Come on NVSL, stay in your lane. Don't make rules above and beyond CDC and VDH.

Fingers crossed they drop the masks. The first day of summer swim practice was delightful and my kids were smiling nonstop.

agreed. we have been keeping masks for the little ones just so the kids know that they are still on the table with swim.

So who is voting and what are they voting on?

The NVSL board on what A meets will look like with regard to a mask policy. Everyone on deck, children only, children under 12, adults and children who are unvaccinated.

B meets are up to each home pool every Monday but for A meets they operate under whatever construct NVSL decides. This may be their middle ground of comfort in order to get a full slate of timers and officials on deck. Sucks but not a deal breaker for me. Swim team is a highlight of my child’s summer, so I’ll go with whatever if he can swim.

Only 5 new cases in FFX county with the vaccinations continuing to go up. The kids don’t need the masks outside.

No kidding. This has been obvious since forever. If you are concerned about your kid catching COVID -OUTSIDE- when vaccination rates are so high and cases are so low around here—I guess make your kids wear N95s. Requiring anyone to wear a mask outdoors as this point is asinine.

No masks required for anyone is still an option, right?

It should be the rule—if you want to mask up feel free to do so.

what is funny is that kids at our pool go to dive practice where masks are not required even on deck, when waiting in line together and warming up together. Then walk to the other end of the pool for swim practice where masks are required. it makes no sense.

So did NVSL dive make a difference decision? Our team is only swim.

Why would masks ruin summer swim? I personally hope they require them for 11&U. Many pool decks are small and during meets the kids are very close together. We've told our kids when out playing with friends that the 2 of 3 rule applies. Outside and distanced as they play games and run around, no mask. If they want to sit side by side and talk, as my 10yr old wants to, then to mask up. They've been doing this at school for months, it's no big deal.

I don't think the whole masks all the way to the blocks is necessary, but would be completely fine with requiring it while they're all crammed together for hours on end.
