This thread is appalling.

I had no idea the Klan was so strong in McLean.

Let’s see the reaction when property taxes immediately double to cover every other service the state or county provides, and businesses relocate to other parts of Fairfax County because little McLean becomes a more expensive place to do business.

McLean would no longer be apart of Virginia?

Pretty sure McLean would be ok economically.

+1 McLean usually pays more in taxes to the county than it gets back in services. So their property taxes would not be likely to increase.

FCPS is too big and no one is being adequately served. If I lived in a part of FCPS that had the resources to independently deliver a high quality education, I'd also support getting out of FCPS. I don't think having a district as big as FCPS is sustainable long term.

the whole reason to do this is to avoid subsidizing affordable areas. There is no chance they would welcome affordable housing

Not so. You can still subsidize affordable areas if you still get reasonable services yourself. McLean doesn’t - just look at recent FCPS priorities:

* keeping Cooper/Longfellow kids out of TJ with no acknowledgement of enrollment impacts on Langley and McLean

* building new additions at less overcrowded schools like Justice and Madison while sticking McLean kids in trailers and a second-hand modular

* developing a new Academy program at Lewis HS next summer on top of AP/IB while Langley and McLean have no special programs and some of the largest class sizes in the county

It’s time to set up a new jurisdiction that has more control over its resources.

Besides a renovation, what does McLean HS need? To transfer some kids to Langley?

How will incorporating do that?

Delivering on promises.

FCPS told McLean it would get an addition back in 2014-15 time frame; then it reneged and slated other schools for additions instead. They also expanded Langley more than previously planned or disclosed - so even if kids do eventually get moved to Langley, they'll be traveling longer distances to HS.

Langley renovation was done by fall 2018. Boundary change should have been ready to implement then. FCPS dragged its heels and planning has been bad. Earliest boundary change now would be fall 2021 - three years too late. FCPS has given no assurances about grandfathering, and had to be hit over the head to recognize the middle schools needed to be included within the scope of a boundary study.

And with autonomy, McLean City could pay potentially teachers more and have smaller class sizes.

Separately, if Great Falls was included, western GF could stop worrying about getting booted out of Langley to Herndon or the phantom western HS that never gets built.

Mclean families don’t want to move to Langley if their kids can’t attend cooper MS. Cooper MS construction hasn’t even begun yet. Another FCPS fail.

Correct. With FCPS running the show, Cooper isn't big enough for Langley, Longfellow is too big for McLean, and their initial solution was to require kids to be in the 20% of kids moving from a different MS than the rest of their ES peers and then the 5-10% of kids moving to a different HS than the rest of their MS peers. Not surprisingly, that wasn't met with a lot of enthusiasm. They should just admit they can't oversee a system this big and that the ESOL/FARMS kids will always be their priority, and let "McLean" (i.e., the areas zoned to Langley and McLean) take over the schools and work it out eventually. They will do a better job than FCPS would.

The woke army usually phrases this as "you need to be more anti-racist" in polite conversation. On DCUM, it's more like "shut up and keep handing over the money or we'll call you the Klan." Whatever.

Are you crazy? McLean welcomes people of all colors and races. There are no racial issues here. This is about breaking away from a county that is clearly too large to function well.

Why is it appalling? If I paid a premium for my house and paid higher tesl estate taxes, and my kids were in overcrowded schools in dilapidated buildings, I would not be happy either. I'd try to figure out how to change that and if breaking from FCPS accomplished that, I'd support that. Why should people sacrifice their kids?

This would be a city that could provide all the same services of Fairfax County. There would not be any fighting with neighborhoods being left behind.

Obviously Fairfax County as an entity as a whole would fight this, but the actual people in Fairfax County would likely not really care - they would be like good riddance.

Fairfax County provides A LOT of resources that people don't ever think about. There are the things that everyone thinks of like schools, zoning, fire department, police, roads, snow removal. But things like courts, health department, disability services, elder services, animal control, libraries, parks, voting, etc. all need to be handled as well.

The majority of the county wouldn’t say good riddance because you’re cleaving off a huge portion of the tax base without taking any needy areas

McLean HS has a Title I feeder in Falls Church that could be carried over to the new McLean City (unless, of course, FCPS agrees the $140M renovation planned for Falls Church HS, which is closer, will open up space for those students)

FCPS has done a piss poor job in managing a number of things. It isnt surprising that families would want to flee.

I am a POC living in McLean and I support this idea, we are sick of county taking truckloads of money and then spending pennies in our area. People in McLean are fed up!!!

McLean isn't treated worse than other areas of Fairfax. You just don't want to be treated the same.

Okay...

Question - are the property tax rates higher in McLean or are you just referring to the fact that your property values are higher, so the overall bill is higher? I thought property taxes were a flat or proportional tax that affect all property owners equally, not a progressive tax, like income taxes.
