McLean to Explore Separating from FC & FCPS

Early indications are that this will be seriously explored, with all the complications it would entail, before the 2024 moratorium on forming new cities expires. A primary driver has been FCPS's treating McLean and nearby areas like a piggy bank to fund programs and improvements elsewhere while saddling McLean schools with large class sizes and in many cases inferior infrastructure.

This happened in my old state. Every community under 50,000 declared themselves a city. You know what happened in 2020? They all got left out of Covid relief funds because the state distributed it at the county level and counties wanted payback.

LOL. That's fine. Watch your taxes go up, up, up, up, up.

It would be bigger than Falls Church City several fold, so they could end up with taxes somewhere between FC and FCC, but better services than they get today.

If you're a city in Virginia, you are a separate jurisdiction from the county. You have the same entitlement to state funds, based on whatever the applicable formula happens to be, as a county. City of McLean would be larger than dozens of VA counties.

I think McLean should do it.

I might move to McLean if they do. I hate the inefficiencies of the large school districts around here.

They should take in GF with them!

How would this work? Would McLean be able to just take over the FCPS school buildings in McLean?

Did FCPS know this was coming and this is the real reason why McLean schools have been so neglected?

Same!

Wealthy areas in Boston did it too- Brookline and Newton. The end result was fabulous school systems and outstanding infrastructure for their residents.

Adorable. More segregation. But this time, let’s make it official.

If this were to get any traction, Great Falls would absolutely want in because if City of McLean takes over Cooper MS and Langley HS...

They should totally do it -- FCPS has completely destroyed our kids' education and shows no remorse for it. And any time people point out that other districts have been able to figure out how to better serve students during this pandemic, the response is always "but FCPS is soooooo big."

The only thing that I think should change is that kids who aren't within FCPS boundaries should be denied TJ slots, but since TJ admissions going down the tubes anyhow, it seeks they wouldn't have much to lose there either.
