McLean to Explore Separating from FC & FCPS

Anonymous
As a resident of Falls Church City, I would say McLean should do it if they can. It's pretty great to have an accessible city government, school board, and superintendent. Small example - a few years ago the bus routes were such that parents couldn't get their K-2 kids and their 3-5 kids to the bus stop at the same time and I simply called the transportation director and it was fixed in a few days.

I think a small school division makes a lot of sense.

MCA's reputation has been of a bunch of mostly older McLean residents who are classic NIMBY, anti-tax types, so if they are willing to pay higher taxes to exit the county there will probably be many others in the area along for the ride.

What is MCA?

McLean Citizens Association - local civic association that residents of the McLean Tax District can choose to join.

McLean Tax District - special tax district designated by the county; residents within the tax district pay an additional tax to fund the McLean Community Center and a teen center.

I will pay higher taxes if it means bringing control of our schools back to McLean and keeping said tax dollars here in McLean!

Did FCPS know this was coming and this is the real reason why McLean schools have been so neglected?

I wonder this too. Seems very complex.

I don't think FCPS knew this was coming. If the county had known this was coming, they'd have worked harder to placate McLean-area residents in recent years.

It is a very complex process, but the impediment has been a state moratorium on the creation of new cities in VA due to expire in 2024. The legislature could always renew the moratorium. But McLean also has a lot of smart people with money who can pay lobbyists and attorneys well versed in local government law.

DP. Will Fairfax County also seek to incorporate?

Tax dollars do stay in McLean. Sheesh.

Umm, no, they don’t. The high property taxes that I pay here in McLean get sent all over the county and are subsidizing other locales.

Well, it's largely one pot at the county level, but McLean residents pay more than they get back from the county, and residents in certain other parts of the county receive more than they pay to the county.

Yes. They stay in the county. It's a big county but the money stays in the county, including McLean. You're not subsidizing Arlington or Prince William.

Doesn't every homeowner pay the same rate?

They stay on the county, not exclusively in McLean. While they are not being sent to PWC, they are being sent to Annandale and Springfield. Their tax payers can support their schools and we can support ours.

Same rate, but the same house on the same price of property isn’t worth the same in Herndon as it is in McLean.

Yes. Now look at the median assessed values in different areas and you'll know who is writing the larger checks.

But this isn't being driven by people complaining against the idea of revenue-sharing. It's being driven by people fed up with the poor level of services and the failure of county bodies like FCPS to discharge basic responsibilities over extended periods.

We live in McLean, and I’m in favor of this. How do we help?

Right. So the taxes paid are only "high" in relation to others because of the value of the home. The rate is the same so it's not a matter of "high property taxes in McLean".

Join the MCA or start watching their meetings and find out who is taking the lead.
