It gets harder to guilt-trip people after you've flipped them off for years.

If you say so.

This thread is appalling.

I had no idea the Klan was so strong in McLean.

I am a POC living in McLean and I support this idea, we are sick of county taking truckloads of money and then spending pennies in our area. People in McLean are fed up!!!

McLean isn't treated worse than other areas of Fairfax. You just don't want to be treated the same.

Okay...

Wrong.

Why is it appalling? If I paid a premium for my house and paid higher tesl estate taxes, and my kids were in overcrowded schools in dilapidated buildings, I would not be happy either. I'd try to figure out how to change that and if breaking from FCPS accomplished that, I'd support that. Why should people sacrifice their kids?

Question - are the property tax rates higher in McLean or are you just referring to the fact that your property values are higher, so the overall bill is higher? I thought property taxes were a flat or proportional tax that affect all property owners equally, not a progressive tax, like income taxes.

McLean wanted a better community center than the rest of the county, so they have a special taxing district to pay for it

This would be a city that could provide all the same services of Fairfax County. There would not be any fighting with neighborhoods being left behind.

Obviously Fairfax County as an entity as a whole would fight this, but the actual people in Fairfax County would likely not really care - they would be like good riddance.

Fairfax County provides A LOT of resources that people don't ever think about. There are the things that everyone thinks of like schools, zoning, fire department, police, roads, snow removal. But things like courts, health department, disability services, elder services, animal control, libraries, parks, voting, etc. all need to be handled as well.

The majority of the county wouldn’t say good riddance because you’re cleaving off a huge portion of the tax base without taking any needy areas

McLean HS has a Title I feeder in Falls Church that could be carried over to the new McLean City (unless, of course, FCPS agrees the $140M renovation planned for Falls Church HS, which is closer, will open up space for those students)

so one title I feeder- do they want a cookie?

Nope, just a separate jurisdiction not saddled with the incompetence and inefficiency of FC/FCPS.

Agreed. And anyone moving to McLean would have to pass a background check to make sure they are of the right demographic. As a PP mentioned up thread, we don’t our resources to help those living in Annandale or Springfield. So we must ensure that only a certain demographic can move to McLean.

Stop making this about demographics, McLean has a very diverse population. These guilt trips don’t work anymore, we want better for our community and that’s what is behind this idea.

People in McLean pay higher taxes because their property is worth more. No one is saying tax "rate". I said real estate taxes--a function of both rate AND VALUE. People pay more for their houses because they think their kids wil attend a school reflecting the increased amount they paid for their houses. If you are so focused on the tax "rate" being equal, then why do you object to McLean families wanting to leave FCPS? I mean, they're not contributing any more from a tax rate perspective, so you should be completely neutral to them leaving. Right?

+1. But of course it's easier to make lazy claims about privilege hoarding than acknowledge just how inefficient FCPS has become (and how its agenda is largely controlled by a coalition of SJWs and pork-barrel politicians from the southern part of the county). Time to split off!

it's entirely about demographics, rich people don't like title I schools getting more funding and attention so they want to break away to keep their tax dollars away from the poorer schools. Local control is the usually euphemism used for secession when the rich part of the district breaks away from the poorer, it's a popular trend in the south https://www.vox.com/2019/9/6/20853091/school-secession-racial-segregation-louisiana-alabama

It's not about avoiding integrated schools; it's about taking care of neglected schools (and roads, commercial areas, and so on).

Feel free to make your case about why people in McLean should gladly accept, for example, FCPS spending $40M to expand West Potomac HS to 3000 seats (in large part, by the way, so kids won't have to attend under-enrolled Mount Vernon a few miles away) but saddle McLean HS with a cheap modular. But you might want to read up on tipping points first.

So, people are forever shackled to a poorly run huge district because the district needs their money to subsidize other parts of the district? I live in Eastern Fairfax and think FCPS is too large and extremely poorly run.

Mclean high is so neglected that it's only one of the best schools in the state not the best school

No one is complaining about roads.

Everyone wants their renovation now. McLean really wants to pay for their renovation now? If McLean City includes Langley HS, then Langley families will be paying for half of the new McLean high school. They can afford it, right? Soak the rich? So funny.
