We've been talking about Chadwick Boseman over the weekend at home. He was remarkable and now, knowing he was working (often on very physically demanding roles) while undergoing surgeries and chemo -- he's even more remarkable, not just for sheer physical stamina, but for force of will. I think credit also has to go to the people who knew about his illness and honored his wish to keep it totally private. It would have been so easy, in this culture of social media that always needs gossip to fuel it, for some doctor or nurse or assistant or acquaintance or suspicious film-set employee to at least hint enough at this news for it to get out. But it seems it never truly did, other than when some people on social media started speculating about his weight loss, which seems to have been very late, not long before he died. I'm glad he was able to keep control of his own narrative for so very long.

Apparently he didn't even tell Disney/Marvel that he was sick which has some interesting implications seeing as he's died and they're left with a billion-dollar franchise with no lead that was supposed to start filming in six months.

No one is required to disclose health issues to employers. Thank you HIPAA! This is exactly how it should be.

We have had 'leventy-billion Batmans and Spider-Mans, they can figure it out. Mahershela Ali would be great.

Don’t know why you’re thanking a law that has nothing to do with employers. Head to the Health or Jobs forum and you’ll learn what is applicable for employment.

There were rumors that the cast of major productions (think Mission Impossible and Captain America) needed to take full physicals before accepting the role and going into production.

Now Disney has said that is flat-out untrue. But let's not act like that you NEVER have to 'disclose health issues to employers'. I'm pretty sure fighter pilots and NASA astronauts have to disclose health issues to the military before accepting their assignments. Especially those based on the International Space Station.

+1 to the bold

And for all any of us randoms here on the Internet knows....he might well have told someone at Marvel about it, not as employee to employer, but as friends. I wouldn't be surprised if someone high up within Marvel knew but, again, respected his wishes. It's not like they could change the outcome, sadly, if they let it get out.

Marvel will be just fine with its billion-dollar franchise. It's already established in the beloved comics that Shuri becomes the Black Panther at a certain point, so if Marvel wants to pivot to its first black, female leading superhero--they're going to crush it. People will turn out in droves. I sure would turn out.

I'm just sorry that we even have to have this sad conversation.

Mahershela is too skinny.

Kofi Siriboe, Shameik Moore, Stephan James, or Aldis Hodge. You need someone who looks like he could bulk easily while still having the regal presence of an African king.

Big fan of Aldis Hodge here, and I'd love to see him get a huge breakout role like that. But it's Letitia Wright, Shuri, for the win here.

I was actually wondering if he may have delayed treatment or taken a break etc while filming. I always thought actors had to be available as needed when filming on site. As the lead, I wouldn’t think he would have many days off to plan for treatments. I was also thinking there would be more side effects then. Not blaming at all, but was wondering. I have had minor health issues that required regular health appointments and I couldn’t even hide that (or rather, could have not shared but needed to take leave).

He apparently thought up until the very end that he would make it, and gain his weight back to start filming.

That’s neither here nor there, because...Shuri is the next Black Panther anyway. I don’t see them replacing him.

It was a 4 year battle. It kept coming back, but he kept beating it. He wasn't in treatment continuously over those 4 years. He had a recurrence and probably thought he'd be able to beat it, just like all the other times. This time, he probably had a scan about a week before he died that showed not only that the recurrences weren't responding to chemo, but that they had become untreatable. This is how recurrent cancer often presents.
