Apparently he didn't even tell Disney/Marvel that he was sick which has some interesting implications seeing as he's died and they're left with a billion-dollar franchise with no lead that was supposed to start filming in six months.

It was a 4 year battle. It kept coming back, but he kept beating it. He wasn't in treatment continuously over those 4 years. He had a recurrence and probably thought he'd be able to beat it, just like all the other times. This time, he probably had a scan about a week before he died that showed not only that the recurrences weren't responding to chemo, but that they had become untreatable. This is how recurrent cancer often presents.[/quote]
