We've been talking about Chadwick Boseman over the weekend at home. He was remarkable and now, knowing he was working (often on very physically demanding roles) while undergoing surgeries and chemo -- he's even more remarkable, not just for sheer physical stamina, but for force of will. I think credit also has to go to the people who knew about his illness and honored his wish to keep it totally private. It would have been so easy, in this culture of social media that always needs gossip to fuel it, for some doctor or nurse or assistant or acquaintance or suspicious film-set employee to at least hint enough at this news for it to get out. But it seems it never truly did, other than when some people on social media started speculating about his weight loss, which seems to have been very late, not long before he died. I'm glad he was able to keep control of his own narrative for so very long.
Apparently he didn't even tell Disney/Marvel that he was sick which has some interesting implications seeing as he's died and they're left with a billion-dollar franchise with no lead that was supposed to start filming in six months. https://thedirect.com/article/chadwick-boseman-reportedly-kept-cancer-battle-private-from-marvel-studios-disney
No one is required to disclose health issues to employers. Thank you HIPAA! This is exactly how it should be.
+1 to the bold And for all any of us randoms here on the Internet knows....he might well have told someone at Marvel about it, not as employee to employer, but as friends. I wouldn't be surprised if someone high up within Marvel knew but, again, respected his wishes. It's not like they could change the outcome, sadly, if they let it get out. Marvel will be just fine with its billion-dollar franchise. It's already established in the beloved comics that Shuri becomes the Black Panther at a certain point, so if Marvel wants to pivot to its first black, female leading superhero--they're going to crush it. People will turn out in droves. I sure would turn out. I'm just sorry that we even have to have this sad conversation.
