Defund MPD - thoughts?

Lol. I can't wait to liberals get their utopia in Minneapolis when they have no police. Better exercise your 2A rights or move, because Minneapolis is about to turn into Mad Max after lawless hoodlum completely overrun the city with violence and mayhem with zero repercussions. What a bunch of morons brainwashed on wokeness. I can't wait until Minneapolis turns into and apocalyptic wasteland like how Detroit looked in RoboCop. The tax base will flee in no time and the city will be a decrepit sewer. They'll be crying for the federal government to step in and enforce the law when Minneapolis becomes a lawless hellhole.

We need the police to prevent from descending into chaos and anarchy.

The police shouldn’t go. It’s the current policing culture that needs to change.

I’m guardedly optimistic that what we’re seeing and participating in today will ultimately lead to a meaningful change in that culture.

What you mean. All you have to do is send an Emt and a social worker in. Nbd /s

You’re going to send an EMT and social worker into a home in which a husband is actively beating the crap out of his wife, or pistol whipping her with a loaded weapon?

You’re going to send an EMT and social worker into a store that’s been robbed?

You’re going to send an EMT and social worker to deal with a reckless driver doing 115 mph on the Beltway?

You’re going to send an EMT and social worker into the middle of the next mass shooting to deal with a heavily-armed active shooter?

This list could go on, too...

Why would you send an armed person into a store that was already robbed? Send an investigator. Besides, if it was MPD they're probably just ask "what do you want me to do about it? Do I look like a time traveler?" Or mark it as "lost property".

Also, the police don't do crap about speeding on the beltway. Nice try.

On all your other examples, why should we let the exception make the rule? How often are police responding to some petty stuff that doesn't actually require armed goons?

But getting rid of cops entirely is mindnumbingly stupid.

OP literally said "Sure, we still need some armed officers"

So do you agree with downsizing? Or really, recategorizing many jobs to be more administrative, like to the people who ticket parked cars?

We need many fewer armed law enforcement officers, and more mental health professionals, social workers, etc. If you call 911 to say a crazy person is on your block ranting (which happens constantly in NYC, where i used to live) a cop shouldn’t be the one responding to that situation. It should be a mental health professional, who knows how to interact with that person and can make the determination about whether that person needs services.

This is an intriguing idea. Do any countries do this in any substantial way? Or at least send a mental health professional with the officer?

A cop isn’t trained to handle that situation properly and too often ends up escalating it.

As a social worker, no way I'm going out until a situation is stabilized.

Abolishing slavery is a ridiculous pie-in-the-sky idea that some ridiculous liberals came up with. Yes, we agree that it can be a bit cruel, but we think that moderates will get on board with a book to ensure that the number of bearings and rapes is limited to a reasonable amount.

I really hope this was posted by a troll.

Is killing the threshold? Do you want to know about the people injured, abused, or harassed?

Thanks providing zero information, but Ok then can you point me to information about how many people have been injured, abused, or harassed? I’m just looking for actual information, not your feelings.

There's no data like that because it's not collected. There is a little data on police stops by race or stop and frisk. I'm sure you can Google that.

I think it would be really interesting to have more comprehensive data on police harassment, but not with the time. Go spend some time in communities outside your bubble and see how the police treat them. Or if you want do that, listen to what they're saying with an open mind.

Walk around Baltimore. See how you like it? Walk around mid afternoon? Are you safe? Walk around at 5:00 pm. Have ya'll read the threads about not even walking one block in Baltimore? The threads are not even about safety in the evening or later? Do the same in Chicago. Chicago's nick name is Chi raq prounced Shy Raq is in Iraq.

Yeah, we should make changes to Baltimore to make it more like Cape Cod. Right? You are taking about solving poverty and every issues it touches, right?

Otherwise it sounds like you're just saying that Black people need to be police to keep them in line. Is that what you're saying?

Ok I’m the poster who asked for information (none of the following responses were me). The problem is, if you’re going to have a radical slogan like “defund the police,” you need to convince me with facts, not just telling me to have an open mind. Especially in a city like DC where MPD is 50% black. When a man was trying to break into my home, I called MPD. The officers who responded were extremely professional and comforting. This is an anecdote that obviously doesn’t describe everyone’s experience with them. So in the same vein anecdotes about unprofessional MPD officers are not going to convince me when you cannot point to any facts or data suggesting MPD is rampant with racists looking to kill innocent black people.

Agree. No cops? What about rapes and murders? Figure that out and deal with it on your own?

Have you talked to women who have been raped? Do you know how badly cops deal with that? Unless there's an active ongoing rape, you need a compassionate investigator, not a high school dropout who likes to lord their power over others.

It was the prevailing attitude during slavery. Ok, the last part was made up to show how ridiculous a moderate compromise can be.

There's a lot of information out there on the problems with policing in DC. Not all of it is data because, again, data is not collected. If your threshold is "did someone on DCUM spoon-feed me the information" then you're being really lazy. Almost as if certain people's lives don't matter to you. Try harder.

Nice try, but you’re the one with the platform so it’s YOUR job to educate people about it. Try harder.

Who exactly do you think I am? I'm just a person interested in making the world s better place. I don't have a political office, a platform, or anything else like that.

Consider how you'd have for into society during slavery. "Abolish slavery? Show me some data on how many beatings and rapes there are. I'm not going to learn anything more until you tell me about it.". Really, the kind of people MLK warned us about.

"Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

It won’t. What will happen is tremendous white flight and a rush to buy assault weapons
