likelihood of a government shut down?

Not everyone has kids or not everyone has school age kids. And the vacationers are in the position where they aren't worried about back pay -- they're saying they can skip a paycheck or two and still chill in the Bahamas with no worries.

A lot of feds have more money than annual leave too. That's where we are. We're comfortable with our lives and wish we could travel to see grandparents and vacation more.

Exactly!

Also, to the PP whio said Feds should go on vacation, that isn’t an option since you have to come back with less than a day’s notice.

You don't have 1-2 days of vacation time? You'd get your entire vacation w/o using annual leave and then when the re opening was announced, if you couldn't make it back the next day -- take 1 or 2 days off?

Lol. You get that there is no one to approve vacation, so you cannot just take it. The expectation is that you return the day the shutown. Most people do not have the luxury of just telling the boss “oh sorry, I took a vacation without permission, see you in a few days.”

This. They told us we have to report the first day back from shutdown, even if on previously scheduled travel. I'm sure reasonable bosses would look the other way but it is not the usual "oh hey, I need tomorrow off."

Super likely. Haven't checked this evening but around 3 pm, Dem Senators were saying they have enough votes to block a CR.

The House votes to avert shutdown, what does this mean now?

I wish the dems would keep their mouths shut. They need to let the GOP take the ENTIRE blame on this shutdown.

I can't believe the Dems would actually cause the government to shut down. Would like to think they wouldn't stoop to that level.

That bill goes to the Senate now. If Senate were to get 60 votes -- it passes and the gov't stays open until Feb 16. But to get to 60 votes, you need 8 Dem votes. Dems announced hours a go that they have a blocking position and will block.

To those saying Dems won't stoop so low, come on, yes they will. Anything for the illegals.

Sorry, but as a big taxpayer I'm not going to lose sleep given how much waste there is.

No. Go back to whatever hole your great great grandparents emigrated from (probably illegally).

A shutdown will not save you money. It will waste a lot of money. Work will pile up and then agencies will have to authorize overtime for work that has to get done quickly. Scheduled meetings, conferences, travel - it’ll all be suspended and that money will be wasted. So go ahead sleep tight snookums. You clearly have no idea where your money goes.

Nope no one in my family ever came illegally so nice try. They all came the legal route with masters degrees from their own country and job offers in the US in hand. Pretty sure our south of the border population aint in that boat.

You don't have to lose sleep, but a shutdown COSTS taxpayers money after the fact. Esp in the areas of IT/tech -- contractors are furloughed now and won't get backpay and then the WEEKS worth of network upkeep that hasn't been done ALL needs to get done the moment the government opens -- which means massive amounts of overtime pay for night and weekend work which far exceeds the savings from the furloughs. It's better to keep the gov't running than to stop and start. And IT is the only example I'm aware of bc it affects every single gov't agency -- I suspect there are other agency specific examples too.

If that's what you think it's about -- well, that attitude is not going to avert the shutdown. To avert the shutdown, the Republicans have to compromise with the Democrats. "The Democrats will do anything for the illegals" is not an attitude conducive to compromise.
