likelihood of a government shut down?

That bill goes to the Senate now. If Senate were to get 60 votes -- it passes and the gov't stays open until Feb 16. But to get to 60 votes, you need 8 Dem votes. Dems announced hours a go that they have a blocking position and will block.

To those saying Dems won't stoop so low, come on, yes they will. Anything for the illegals.

If that's what you think it's about -- well, that attitude is not going to avert the shutdown. To avert the shutdown, the Republicans have to compromise with the Democrats. "The Democrats will do anything for the illegals" is not an attitude conducive to compromise.

But the Democrats don't need to compromise at all!

Super likely. Haven't checked this evening but around 3 pm, Dem Senators were saying they have enough votes to block a CR.

I wish the dems would keep their mouths shut. They need to let the GOP take the ENTIRE blame on this shutdown.

A shut down is the fault of the ENTIRE Congress

A shutdown will not save you money. It will waste a lot of money. Work will pile up and then agencies will have to authorize overtime for work that has to get done quickly. Scheduled meetings, conferences, travel - it’ll all be suspended and that money will be wasted. So go ahead sleep tight snookums. You clearly have no idea where your money goes.

Exactly. And as someone who works for a company whose business is made up of 80% government clients, we take a hit. Our paid interns and temp-to-hire people have been notified that they will not be needed if the shutdown happens. There are no winners. It’s a giant trickle down situation.

In 2013 everything took a hit - restaurants located near fed offices where people grab lunch; dc hotels bc no one is showing up for business trips for hearings before various agencies. While I’m sure Chipotle and Sbux do fine, all the trucks in the various food truck lines were talking about how they were taking a hit and if it went on much longer they were worried about making the rent/bills at home.

Small businesses are another group the republicans pretend to care about.

I bet it will literally be passed at the 11th hour.

^Anyone now feeling a CR is imminent? Trump was to fly to FL at 4 pm. Now he won’t go until there’s a CR in place. He’s got a 10k/plate party tomorrow night that he needs to attend — if they can get anything in front of him, he’ll sign. Though I suppose Dems will refuse to sign onto the CR still bc illegals . . . .

He's going to "sign" via twitter; probably from his fancy dinner and then come back to town Sunday to sign the real thing. I'm betting on a 2 day shut down, they'll battle it out through the weekend, pass something late sunday and we can all return to work Monday (for another month until we're in the same boat!)

We're prepping at work today like the shutdown is happening.

We've received the text of we need to use as our OOO email response and we've received reminders of when to enact it.

My boss has already issued an email that no one is to take any work or work issued devices home today (other than cell phones).

I think it's going to happen.

Monday was a dream because of MLK Day. No feds near my office. Traffic was a breeze, and workers at the lunch and coffee places were nice because they weren't getting nickled and dimed by the cheap feds.

Yes I’m a fed who often tries to negotiate my sandwich price at Pret. Wtf?! You can be happy for no traffic but is it necessary to put down feds as people all the time?!

Funny. We have heard absolutely nothing. And last time we stayed open for a bit, but no one knows if that will happen again this time if there is a shutdown.

Well, I hope you tip those workers extra if the shutdown happens since most will get their hours reduced and/or let go.

My niece is a barista downtown while in college and her work has asked for those who work at the coffee shop as a second job to forego shifts if the shutdown happens so that those who only work at the coffee shop can get hours. They won't have payroll to cover everyone based on their past shutdown experience and they don't want to have to let people go permanently.

So, enjoy your light traffic and mostly empty eatery places. You'll still be getting a paycheck and the feds will get their back pay, but the industry workers are the ones who are going to really suffer.

I agree -- clearly some sort of compromise needs to happen if the bill won't even pass. And compromise includes both sides.

Dems have compromised enough - the immigration bill that WOULD PASS if it were put up, includes money for border security etc. They aren't getting a wishlist - they are just asking for some concessions, and R's don't seem willing to give them any. So here we are. After 3 or so CRs with little progress, I see no reason to trust the party that controls the Senate, the House and the Presidency. [That would be the R's, even though they seem to want the public to believe differently]
