Not surprising given the absolute sh*tshow last year and at graduation.

That was 2024— last year was certainly a sh!tshow but 2025 was different.

I wouldn’t say graduation was a sh!tshow

I wasn’t there, but it sounded pretty ugly. “Minor fights” between protesters and families, batter on LEO, etc.

Huh. I was there the whole weekend and didn’t see or hear about anything like that.

Worst thing we experienced was the speeches for each of the multiple honorary grads, including one who told the grads to try and make as much money as possible.

Here’s the NYT article: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/12/us/pomona-college-graduation-protests.html?unlocked_article_code=1.8E8.Zwoy.V-hI6t7gdPmK&smid=url-share

Sorry— that was 2024, which was a sh!tshow all year up thru graduation (which the admin rescheduled at the last minute meaning some families missed it) but 2025 was very different. Thought you were referring to 2025 graduation.

Yeah 2025 is completely different. President Starr made it so that if you organize any protest and something wrong happens, it's your fault and you will get suspended (and potentially expelled). They've effectively shut $hit down.

President Starr went completely East German Stasi when kids barged in on an event earlier this fall, asking students to become informers - everything. She is an embarrassment to Pomona. Never attended or taught at a liberal arts college before walking into the Pomona presidency; a SLAC defines “community” a little differently than NYU.

“Barged in on an event”?

Why don’t you share the full story?

https://www.thecollegefix.com/video-masked-pro-palestinian-activists-disrupt-israeli-memorial-at-pomona-college/

They’re lucky they didn’t get shot.

These threads are pointless. Neither side is going to admit the other one is wrong.

Wait, are you actually suggesting Israel shouldn't exist? Yeah, that's a problem

Not as a theocracy, apartheid state, no. Your defending it is the problem.

A multicultural Palestine with federalism and protected minorities, including Jews? Sounds good to me.

This is hilarious. I’m laughing. There has never been a sustained multicultural Arab country where Jews or Christians for that matter have been protected. We are forced to pay tax and be second class citizens, and then come the pogroms and we are either forced out or fortunate enough to escape.

Meanwhile Israel is busy bombing churches in Gaza and burning Christian villages in the West Bank. Muslim, Christians and Jews lived together in Palestine and other Arab countries for centuries. Arab countries absorbed and welcomed the refugees from 1942 Spain and Jews fleeing the Holocaust in Europe. And look what thanks the Palestinians got for welcoming them! Whatever enmity there is started with the creation of Israel and the ensuing wars and Israel’s continuing overt and covert aggression against the Arab countries, as well as their horrible treatment of the Palestinians.

This is a load of bullshit. There is a designation under islamic law for non-muslims living within islamic land and how they should be treated. It's is second class citizenship.
And jews were not welcomed in 1924 by muslims. Palestine was a BRITISH mandate in 1924 and there was plenty of violence between Jews and Muslims. The mufti of jerusalem famously met with hitler.

And it's a little disingenuous to characterize war a "treatment of the Palestinians." This is war, these are all casualties of war. A war Gaza started. A war that Gaza can end at any time.

Jewish population in Palestine was 39,000 in 1914 and went to over 600,000 by 1947. This was fueled by Zionist immigration. The population went from under 5% to over 30% before the 1948 Arab-Israeli. These new immigrants were not peaceful and killed Palestinians and stole their property. The founding of Israel was through terrorism. Non-Jews in Israel are second class citizens living in an apartheid state.

The new immigrants were peaceful and killed Palestinians only in self defense and did not steal property. The founding of Israel was not through terrorism. Non-Jews in Israel are not second class citizens. Israel is not an aparthheid state.

At the inception of Israel, 750,000 Palestinians were expelled or otherwise forced to leave their homeland through an event known as the Nakba (the "Catastrophe"). Beyond the violent acts associated with such a displacement, the theft of property seems indisputable.

There is so much documented history of Zionist terrorism in the holy land last century into this one, any dope like the one five or six posts above asserting that Zionism is anything resembling peaceful doesn’t even deserve the courtesy of a response. You can’t cure a lifelong liar.

Just slowly wringing the towel of this systemic evil, doing my own little part to ensure that I don’t make life any easier for evildoers wherever they hide. I take the long view in assessing who’s an evildoer and who’s a situational bad actor. I find that sorts out the mess best.

Point taken, but my focus is the impact on colleges and the students’ behavior (not on Israel/Gaza).

In that narrow context, the students’ behavior has been egregious.

Agree, very clear many students either don't know the difference between speech and conduct or they somehow believe they can engage in trespass, harassment, vandalism and more. It is well past time for schools to be enforcing the rules regardless of the motivations
