Did Trump's cuts to NOAA and the National Weather Service impact predicting the flash floods in central Texas?

Texas certainly doesn’t. They have no issue letting their young children die to guns, disease, and floods.

This narrative you're trying to spin about NOAA/NWS is pure propaganda. There were no staffing issues and they sent out one alert after another. You people need to get a grip.

At 4:03 a.m., the office issued an urgent warning that raised the potential of catastrophic damage and a severe threat to human life.

Jonathan Porter, the chief meteorologist at AccuWeather, a private weather forecasting company that uses National Weather Service data, said it appeared evacuations and other proactive measures could have been undertaken to reduce the risk of fatalities.

“People, businesses, and governments should take action based on Flash Flood Warnings that are issued, regardless of the rainfall amounts that have occurred or are forecast,” Porter said in a statement.

At 4 AM the flooding had already hit. I am not casting blame, just pointing it out.

I don’t think so. I think the rain started shortly after 4 according to eyewitness accounts. A guy was out for a very early jog.

NWS started issuing forecasts and warnings about this storm on Tuesday and there is plenty of evidence of this. The forecasts and warnings repeatedly escalated throughout. If the PP is trying to claim NWS said nothing until the flooding was underway then the PP is flat out lying.

At this point, after all of the extreme weather events, all of the science, the research, the data, the models, the papers - if you are still denying climate change, you absolutely are deranged.

It's no propaganda. Yes, NWS still did its job to the best of its ability but its an absolute fact that they and other agencies have lost significant staff, funding and other resources, which puts the nation at risk.

So now that it’s been demonstrably proved that the NWS did have a full staff on had, plus extra personnel, AND issued alerts (which it seems were largely ignored) prior to the flooding, so NOW the narrative is changing.

Now it’s “govt agencies have been reduced in size and budget and more things like this will happen because of that”….. Despite it being clear to everyone now that this flooding tragedy occurred with an over-staffed local NWS office that issued alerts well before the flooding started.

You people are sooooo invested in making this about Trump you’ll twist anything into all manner of narrative-pretzel if you think it sounds deceptive enough to be convincing.

You people are the opposite poll of Brietbart or other RW groups, and you’re every bit as lacking in credibility and integrity.

The issue was that the staff who was there didn't have the institutional knowledge and people at the county level didn't heed the warnings and take actions. If the one meteorologist who left for retirement hadn't, the right people at the county level would have been notified early enough to do something about it. That is still on DOGE.

I know the area well. The camps have been there for many, many decades - I went to one. If you've never been there, you have no idea what you're talking about. Thie speed of the flooding was unpredictable, and no amount of money would have made a difference.

I just think that is a weak and lazy argument. Flooding is in fact predictable, particularly in this area which has flooded many many times. If you are paying careful attention to the locations and rates of the precipitation you in fact can try to predict when and where the flooding will occur. And the more data and experience and research that you put into it will increase the accuracy of the flooding predictions.

You think, but you don't know. Opinion and speculation.. Prove that this could have been prevented through predictive capabilities eliminated by budget cuts. The NWS forecasting offices were operating normally at the time of the disaster, said Greg Waller, service coordination hydrologist with the NWS West Gulf River Forecast Center in Fort Worth.

Would you have said the same thing if we had a President Harris (or even Biden)? Nah, you would have blamed Governor Abbott, and if that didn't stick, then climate change.

Those same people would be dismissed as Boomers by the DCUM crowd. They’d quip about whether they knew how to use a computer or were still making forecasts based on the behavior of livestock or chickens.

Trump is a climate denier has taken extensive action to roll back any initiatives that were aimed at clean energy and combating climate change. He's canceled climate research. He's laid off and reduced staffing at important agencies involved in both researching climate change and responding to climate disasters.

He makes no secret that he intends to dismiss and sabotage any efforts to invest in responding to the increasing frequency and severity of flooding and and other disasters seriously. And his voters support it.

Americans of the opinion that we need to do a lot more rather than a lot less are perfectly entitled to that view and to look at mounting evidence all around us to support it.

Trump’s DOGE gutted the National Weather Service which could have helped predict events like the Mystic Camp floods. FAFO. Turns out the federal govt is useful after all.

NWS predicted flooding. No one cared because no one had died since 1987. They might care now.

Would he interested to read a posting from Musk on X about how his groundbreaking work with DOGE should have prevented this disaster. Ideally, a more efficient system with the help of top-notch AI should have prevented this. I thought that’s what we were aiming for.

Have you actually used AI? It has to be trained, and when you've insulted all the people who are there to train AI and tell them to leave / retire / get other jobs - you get what you get.

And you also need data to feed into AI, except many of those people gathering the data were RIFed and the budgets were cut.

The AI system should have been put into place BEFORE people were fired. Whoops, guess that's what happens when you put tech bros in charge who has never had to deal with whether people live or die.

+1 they just wanted to fire as many people as possible as fast as possible. Nothing was put into place. Many people were rejoicing about useless feds losing cushy jobs. Turns out their was value to systems and institutions and expertise.

Most voters are too deep in their own misinformation bubble to ever see any of the facts about the local NWS expert whose post was empty, etc.

What are you even talking about? What do boomers have to do with staff taking a fork in the road because DOGE wanted to be more efficient and in the process, 100 people are missing or dead?
