This is what Trump is doing to every agency. Gutting teh government so the right can say "see, the government is useless, lets eliminate everything"

All of our tax money has gone to investments, studies and what not to make our lives better and trump is flushing it all down the toilet.

Apparently the Trump admin no longer wants to abolish FEMA. I wonder what changed.

For months, President Donald Trump and his homeland security secretary have said the Federal Emergency Management Agency could be eliminated. But as the president heads to Texas to view the impact of last week’s deadly floods, administration officials say abolishing the agency outright is not on the agenda.
A senior White House official told The Washington Post that no official action is being taken to wind down FEMA, and that changes in the agency will probably amount to a “rebranding” that will emphasize state leaders’ roles in disaster response.
The official and others emphasized that Trump will make the ultimate decision, but said at this point, FEMA is not set to be abolished.

This is so typical of Republicans - penny wise, but pound foolish. They fixate on the price tag of everything but know nothing about the value of anything. And for being supposedly "the party of business" they are astonishingly ignorant about return on investment.

For Hurricane Helene, FEMA's disaster relief fund was underfunded by the budget put in place by Congressional Republicans. Republicans lied about it and claimed it was because all of the FEMA money went to "migrants" and "foreign aid" even though that was false because they were totally separate programs and appropriations. FEMA deployed $137 million in aid, 14.9 million meals, 13.9 million liters of water, and 505,000 tarps. But if you listen to Republicans they did absolutely nothing. Ironically after blasting Biden over Helene response, Trump and Noem didn't really do much more than was already being done.

Also, FEMA is not and has never been a first responder agency. State and local responders are supposed to lead and request aid from FEMA. There were a lot of problems that compounded due to many of the areas needing aid being mountainous, with roads washed, out, and they were only accessible by helicopter. There were tons of communication and coordination issues on the ground, but with Republican desire for limited government and austerity that's what you should expect.
