Did Trump's cuts to NOAA and the National Weather Service impact predicting the flash floods in central Texas?

I thought they issued a watch the prior day and issued a warning that night when the flood happened. The problem was the camp people all had cell phones muted at night it sounded like. That is understandable and just led to tragic results here.

I am no maga but don’t get how the staffing cuts would have had an impact here.

I know the area well. The camps have been there for many, many decades - I went to one. If you've never been there, you have no idea what you're talking about. Thie speed of the flooding was unpredictable, and no amount of money would have made a difference.

The relevance to 1997 and 2025, flooding is whether people received prior warnings. If they were warned in 1997, and had opportunities to evacuate, it proves OP’s point that lack of warning contributed to the 2025 deaths.

I just think that is a weak and lazy argument. Flooding is in fact predictable, particularly in this area which has flooded many many times. If you are paying careful attention to the locations and rates of the precipitation you in fact can try to predict when and where the flooding will occur. And the more data and experience and research that you put into it will increase the accuracy of the flooding predictions.

100% this. As someone that lived in central Texas for many years, it's well known that flooding happens there. A few years ago Bastrop flooded for example. Remember when Ellicott City flooded? They built out infrastructure to prevent it in the future. Does Texas do this? No. Will Texas do this now? No. It's like when the Texas power grid collapsed and people were practically freezing to death. Texas loves claiming they're independent. It's a really bad state.

Except he’s the President of the US. The buck stops with him and he authorized and wanted cuts made at NOAA. He owns this mess and the loss of life. The fact he lacks empathy and cannot show compassion says a lot more about him than those of us saying he created the problem. He gave a speech this weekend where he talked about how he hates Democrats. Do you think this is ok?

He is President. Texas is completely Republican. Republicans laid off thousands of federal scientists including those with the NWS. They cut civilian use of the military weather satellites. They're spending FEMA money at "Alligator Alcatraz". At this point I'd call this is Republican on Republican violence.

Agree this is simply the country we live in. The camp was built in a dumb place between two estuaries. It became a toilet bowl and the kiddos were turds. Could happen to anyone. Did you think you were living in the Netherlands all this time?
