Question for child health experts: Does a tween/teen HAVE TO shower every single day?

Anonymous
I've had multiple dermatologists tell me not to shower daily because I had bad eczema. They were right about my skin but I couldn't handle not showering since it makes me feel good. The therapist is wrong that it is a physical need but maybe it will help the kid with de-stressing. I do agree with you op that she didn't approach it that way and was essentially prescribing her own personal conventions as correct, which is wrong.

The teen didn’t say she isn’t showering daily because she has eczema and her dermatologist said not to, she isn’t showing because she “doesn’t feel like it.” Barring a medical condition that contraindicates it, teens should be showering daily.

That was not in the OP so you're just making shit up. Even a 5th grader knows not to put something in quotation marks if it's not actually a quote.

"Should" be in accordance to your personal lifestyle choices, your opinion. Many kids shower every other day, especially those who are not the kind to get messy, be outside playing or in sports. They are fine, conserving water and don't need it. Some families have very naturally stinky kids so I can see those parents flipping out about the prospect of every other day showers. Their feet even stink. My kids have to shower because they spend a lot of time outdoors and need to wash off the outside smell and dirt. I wouldn't be put off if one of their friends did every other day.

Showering every 3 days is not good for a teen and that’s what the teen in question does. How many healthy active people without eczema do that?

Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.

That guy doesn’t like to shower either.

Daily showers might not be an option for many in years to come thanks to odd weather patterns and historical droughts in some areas. Many states have had restrictions in the past with shower head flow rates and usage. That will be a really sad reality if it comes but I think people can adapt.

Are daily shower fans also daily hair washers? I need to wash my hair daily but people always tell me it's bad to do.

We don't make ours shower every day, and neither has BO or greasy hair. They shower regularly, but not every day - definitely on PE days or days they have sports practice or a game where they get sweaty. (The younger one does have eczema and has a whole hydrating routine to do after showering, but the older one does not.)

I do shower daily but have thick curly hair and there is no way I'm washing it every day.

I do a quick shower daily, but I only wash my hair once or twice a week, but I also do not use a ton of styling products in it regularly, just some anti-frizz balm and, if I'm going for a slicked back look, hairspray or gel. If I wash it more often, it gets super try and even frizzier - and, yes, I've tried practically every shampoo under the sun and same results even with the ultra-moisturizing ones and leave-ins. I wash it if it starts to get greasy around the roots or if there is any buildup on my scalp.

At this point, I'd rather get them from the Dude than you. He is a much happier person.
