The accent really comes and goes in that post. Why/how Alec realized she was not actually Spanish, and how he reconciled himself to this oddness is possibly the most interesting part of the story. You’d think most rich and famous men would be mad they’d been duped, right?

This is the biggest mystery. Was he fooled? Did he know and go along with the ac? I would love to know. She did legally change her name to Hilaria and used the Spanish accent before she met him so she brought that to the relationship.

I think he was genuinely fooled. Even in the police interview for RUST shooting he said “my wife is from Spain”. It’s ingrained into his brain.

She knew he wanted /asked out Selma Hayek. She turned him down. Instead he got the bargain basement version of a Spanish woman. The “boobie prize”. Figuratively and literally.

He dug in and said she was educated in both places, her grandmother was Spanish, most of her childhood was in Spain. This was after griftmas. I think she was throwing things to the wall to see what stuck.

He can’t let himself admit he was duped. Too humiliating

+1. She’s cosplaying as Salma Hayek, apparently for life.

Isn’t Salma cosplaying as a Mexican stereotype who struggles with English when she is full Lebanese and was educated in American private schools?

Only her dad is Lebanese. I think kind of similar to Shakira.

Isn’t Salma cosplaying as a Mexican stereotype who struggles with English when she is full Lebanese and was educated in American private schools?

Yikes.

No, being ethnically from Lebanese and Spanish parents but being born and raised in Mexico doesn’t make her a fake Mexican. Attending high school in the US after being born and raised in Mexico also does not make her a fake Mexican. Maybe loosen that tinfoil hat a little.

Mexico dirt isn’t magic. Two Lebanese parents makes you Lebanese with Mexican citizenship. And educated in private US schools doesn’t give you broken English in your 20s like some Mexican prole. Hillary was only exposed because she’s younger. It was easier to lie in the 90s.

Being born in Mexico, and raised in Mexico, makes you a Mexican citizen. Having an accent like everyone else in Mexico after being born and raised in Mexico is normal. Briefly attending school in the U.S. before returning to Mexico does not erase your accent or your nationality.

I know it’s difficult to understand logic over the sound of the intrusive thoughts in your head, but give it a try.

Her accent is fake, but she too cannot drop it at this point. It's her money maker. I can't believe you don't know this.

- not PP

Are all Mexican people faking their accents or just her?

But isn’t her dad’s family from Mexico and of Lebanese descent? What you’re saying is that Americans of Irish descent are Irish with American citizenship. And then would that mean that Black people are Africans (even though they don’t know their country of origin) with American citizenship?

The Salma Hayek accent thing and Hilary Baldwin are extremely different.

Salma was born in and grew up in Mexico. Also, her dad is Lebanese but had been in Mexico a long time, was a well known businessman and politician there. It's not like he'd just immigrated from Lebanon when she was born. Her mom is Spanish, not Lebanese. Salma attended a private Catholic school in the US from 12-18, but she spent holidays and summers in Mexico with her family. She went to a Mexican university. She then started her career in Mexico and all her early roles were in Mexican telenovelas and films, all Spanish-speaking. It was only once she was fairly successful in Mexican cinema that she got her first Hollywood roles and wound up immigrating to the US.

I am fairly certain that Salma has made an effort to retain her accent after years of living in the US. Yes, it is part of her brand and there are good financial reasons to retain it. This is SUPER common in Hollywood and not restricted to someone from Mexico. Matthew McConaughey has intentionally maintained his accent. So has Jodi Foster. Tina Fey has a very recognizable way of speaking that includes some Pennsylvania vowels and pronunciations. All of these people recognize their voice is part of their public persona and even though they have spent years living among people who do NOT talk like that, they've held onto their accents. My dad is Texan but hasn't lived there in 50 years. He still has a Texas accent.

But Hilary did not naturally develop a Spanish accent growing up in Spain. She has an American accent because she grew up in Boston, and then she decided, as an adult, to adopt a Spanish accent and change her name to Hilaria. She is not even very good at retaining her accent -- as many have pointed out, it comes and goes in interviews and sometimes it's really heavy ("how you say?") and other times she just sounds American (in the Romper video, about 70% of it, there is no accent, and only the brief portion where she speaks Spanish to her kids is the accent even pronounced).

Salma Hayek is a Mexican immigrant. Hilary Baldwin is an American grifter. Let's not pretend these things are the same.

Whatever the case, being born somewhere doesn’t make you ethically Spanish. It’s just citizenship. And a rich elite educated in private American schools doesn’t suddenly have broken English in the 90s plus wear a ton of makeup to make herself look brown skinned to play up stereotypes and a narrative. You’re demonizing Hillary for trying to be Selma, when Selma herself was “cosplaying” as a prole Mexican with broken English and fake brown skin. Again, whatever, who cares, actress lie for a living. But the hypocrisy is humorous.

Her dad was a rich Lebanese businessman. She was allegedly born in Mexico. Who knows what’s true, entertainment media is full of lies, especially in the 90s.

Yes, I’m sure it’s a huge conspiracy and she’s not really from Mexico. You cracked the case! You can’t even spell her name right, jfc

Why did she wear so much makeup and pretend to speak broken English in the 90s? She spoke perfectly fluent English at her private US high school. Her skin is fair like Lebanese women. Another hustler. So sorry I don’t care about Hillary because entertainment is full of hustlers who “reinvent” themselves. Even Washington is full of boring people from podunk places reinventing themselves.
