Pledge of Allegiance in HS

It’s only a $5 fine for every two week period that the teacher fails to lead the pledge, so I am considering just paying and using it as an opportunity to teach a civics lesson to my students. The pledge of allegiance is contrary to the fundamental ideals of this nation.

Interestingly the minister (Francis Bellamy) who wrote the original pledge in 1892 was a SOCIALIST; I wonder if we could start educating MAGA about this terrible truth so maybe they’ll move to abolish the pledge?

And it gets worse! Until 1939 children saying the daily pledge of allegiance also had to give the flag the Bellamy salute:

If MAGA folks knew that, they’d probably want to bring it back.

What state is this?!

Ironically, it was a student in West Virginia who ensured that future students didn't have to stand

Teachers and schools don't have the right to... and I don't really think that mumbling through some words that a lot of students can't define gives them any pride in their country.

Definition of Pride worth teaching to our kids according to FCPS:
-Rainbow and Transgender flags and lessons.
-LGBTQ Pride celebrations all year long.
-Have everyone in the school recite their gender pronouns
.
-Pride in the Pledge of Allegiance to the freedom and liberties represented by the U.S. flag? Nah!

The bolded isn’t happening, however the opportunity to recite the Pledge occurs daily.

Get ready to spew whatever you’re drinking - uber-liberal MASSACHUSETTS!

I’m saving for the fines already.

MA teachers must lead public school classes in ‘Pledge of Allegiance’, students can refuse

All public schools in Massachusetts are required to fly the United States flag on the school grounds on every school day and every legal holiday and teachers are required to lead their class in reciting the “Pledge of Allegiance” at the first class of each day.

Teachers who fail to lead their class in the recitation for a period of two consecutive weeks shall be fined by not more than $5 for each time period.

The law does not require that students recite the pledge.

So you think it's good that schools are willfully breaking the law?

I can't believe how ignorant people are in today's world (you in particular) when you have all of the information at your fingertips.

Years ago, I taught a Jehovah's Witness in first grade. The principal said he should stand in respect for other kids or leave the room. He was not required to say the pledge. His choice.

This principal was big on respect. Teachers were not to drink anything (including coffee) in front of the kids. She said, you don't eat in front of guests in your home and you don't do it at school--unless you offer them something, as well.

Doesn't FCPS call for respect for others? Standing the pledge is showing respect for others. Period.

What?! This part, about not drinking anything in front of kids, is absurd. I can guarantee you that the administration is drinking coffee, tea, soda, smoothies, etc. in their offices. But teachers, who are doing the hard work, can't? That's absurd!

When I was in HS in the early 80s, we did not say the pledge of allegiance.

I can't remember exactly, but I don't think we did in MS either (1979).

Any kid or adult CAN stand and any kid or adult can sit. I’m a teacher. I’m not saying it.

Tell it to the U.S. soldiers who proudly recite the Pledge of Allegiance on a daily basis as they serve and even sacrifice their lives in order to protect your right to have choices and to live in freedom.

Visit veterans and learn from them about the concept of service to others, including those who think differently than they do. You will get a glimpse of the real meaning of pride as reflected in their sacrifice. Similar to being a parent, we love our kids even when we disagree with them.

Do you seriously think we "proudly recite the Pledge of Allegiance on a daily basis?!?" GMAFB. We roll out of bed at 545 scrambling to make it to the 6am formation where we grumble about the time while doing PT. When we're done we scramble right back to housing and sleep as long as possible, get up and head into work like a regular human. At the end of the day, we avoid being outside at the "retreat" call because it is a huge PITA.

Rinse, repeat.

LOL. I just read this to my spouse who laughed and said that in three years of active duty, they never said the pledge once. Nor did they in their reservist years. And they can't think of anyone else who did.

And when the Star-Spangled Banner is played at 6pm, you have to stand at attention if you're outside. So at 5:55, people start to scramble to get indoors, and by 5:59, this turns into a full-fledged panic whereby people start diving into any doors they can find, including closed ones.
