It’s a strange feeling.

Your chances are almost 0 at the top schools unless you're a very wealthy, a famous person or have connections to the school.
Almost everyone is in the same boat especially for the youngest kids when you don't have grades and an academic and extracurricular track record.

It's not a good feeling because it's so random and the criteria are not clearly laid out.

This simply isn't true. We are none of these things and got into multiple highly regarded schools. Now, at one of them, I see that this myth above isn't the reality at these schools.

Same here.

Chances are not almost 0. We have no wealth, fame or connections. Two kids got into 3 different schools at different times.

This zero chance poster is quite ignorant. Look at the class makeups at the top schools in K, 9th, etc. We are at 2 different top schools and the stereotype of you get in only for wealth or connections is just not true. It’s a bit tougher for K bc it’s based on one playdate, teacher references, parent interview, etc, but by the time you get to 9th it really is on the kids abilities and what they bring to the table.

It depends on your definition of "almost 0." You can make a reasonable argument that a single digit admit rate could be considered "almost 0."

The sample of one posters above who argue the chances are not almost 0 because their child or children got in think a single digit admit rate is not that bad because they had success.

Wait so you are saying a famous or extreme rich parents chances are the same as everyone else’s?

Our kids go to a big 3 they have been there since 6th. They are coming to the end of High School. I have second thoughts about the time and money spent. There were lots of frustrations and many things we disliked about the school. There were also positives but in the end, I am not sure it was worth it. We were so happy when they were accepted. We were engaged with the school and happy for much of middle school but high school has been a very mixed bag. Just some food for thought as you guys await these decisions. I know it's stressful. Be aware not everything is what it's cracked up to be.

can you elaborate on the negatives?

Negatives- Cost! Meh Teachers. False sense of being seen in the world (big one!! they get a lot of attention...they make them feel too special)

Some argue the best teachers are at the publics because they pay MUCH more.

We both WFH on Fridays so someone will probably just yell decisions from across the house. We’ve agreed to not obsess over it in front of DD (she’s 4) so we’ll try to turn off the anxiety by 5 to go pick her up.

I feel bad for your kid that you’re both this stressed over this at 4.

My child is also 4, so you are not alone. We are super stressed.

My chld is 5 and I'm beyond nervous. Good uck to all the kiddos

Life isn't always fair. Obviously the "extremes" have unfair advantages everywhere in life.

Are you all gonna use your phones or old school computers to log in to the portal today?
Anonymous
Ridiculous, but I just rescheduled my 4:00 meeting today so I can log on freely and not have to worry about reacting while on Zoom. I mean, who schedules at 4pm on a Friday anyway...?
