This was the 1st generation that had to grow up with the possibility of kids having cell phones/social media. We've done an abysmal job of managing it. We should have demanded parental features (that kids can't by pass) on all phones so phones could be set to "call only" mode during school hours, at least. The school districts won't champion this, only the phone manufacturers can.

Man, I definitely like that idea. And you're so right, we definitely let them get away with everything and handed these unlocked devices to our kids without a second thought.

Don't need the phone companies. I posted up thread. We need phone pouches.

https://aleteia.org/2022/09/26/the-15-gadget-thats-eliminating-cell-phone-use-at-schools-and-concerts/

Some schools have already started using them.

You guys are completely focused on the wrong thing. That NJ story is horrifying. But, the problem is not phones. The HUGE problem in that case, and in these MCPS fights is that our kids are being ASSAULTED AT SCHOOL. Truly, that is the problem. The poor girl in NJ should never have been beaten up like that IN a school building.

Fights outside of school have gone on since the beginning of time. But the proliferation of fights in school should be a huge issue for all parents. It's not just the kid being beaten up who is in danger. Teachers or staff who try to break up the fight are in danger. Innocent kids who are standing around at their lockers are in danger.

Again, the issues is the violence in schools, not the phones.

Agree and the solution is 0 tolerance for violent behavior.

+1 If the violent behavior is stopped, then there's nothing to video.

Almost every single fight at the middle school and high school I have taught at started on social media.

What does zero tolerance look like? Prison?

Expulsion. If that's not permitted, then they should make a law permitting it.

Expulsion of kids leading to what sort of outcome? More crime on the street? That doesn't help any of us.

Incorrect. The NJ case specifically states the girls were immediately suspended. It was the videos going viral. The Dad said it in the interview.

This. Work on cutting down on the violent behavior and drugs at school. Less drugs AT school means less overdoses and hopefully, less girls passed out on bathroom floors. Less violence, means less fights.

MCPS can crack down on this. Enforce consequences for kids using drugs at school, please.

What happens outside of school is not schools responsibility, it's not other students responsibility. Students who want to learn at school have the right to feel SAFE at school. At freaking school people!! This should be the safest place for a child to be.

Change the law that violent offenders don't have a right to education in their local public.

That may be true but fighting in school didn’t start with the advent of the internet and cellphones. And kids have been bringing weapons into school for forever. I went to school in the 1970s and I don’t think a year went by where I didn’t witness a stabbing and I tried to avoid trouble.

Actually, MD Code allows Expulsion. MCPS regs allow Expulsion. If child not transferred to another school, they can be given daily classwork to do at home. The only issue I see is the MCPS regs seem to imply students should be given second chance. I don't think that's appropriate for most violent students who attack other students wholly unprovoked.

These kids can do virtual schooling but should not be making the classrooms dangerous for students and staff. That way an education is still provided, but safety is the parents concern.

Yeah, with Virtual school being an option, not sure why that can’t be used. Keep the dangerous kids out of the classroom.
