This was the 1st generation that had to grow up with the possibility of kids having cell phones/social media. We've done an abysmal job of managing it. We should have demanded parental features (that kids can't by pass) on all phones so phones could be set to "call only" mode during school hours, at least. The school districts won't champion this, only the phone manufacturers can.

Man, I definitely like that idea. And you're so right, we definitely let them get away with everything and handed these unlocked devices to our kids without a second thought.

Don't need the phone companies. I posted up thread. We need phone pouches.

https://aleteia.org/2022/09/26/the-15-gadget-thats-eliminating-cell-phone-use-at-schools-and-concerts/

Some schools have already started using them.

You guys are completely focused on the wrong thing. That NJ story is horrifying. But, the problem is not phones. The HUGE problem in that case, and in these MCPS fights is that our kids are being ASSAULTED AT SCHOOL. Truly, that is the problem. The poor girl in NJ should never have been beaten up like that IN a school building.

Fights outside of school have gone on since the beginning of time. But the proliferation of fights in school should be a huge issue for all parents. It's not just the kid being beaten up who is in danger. Teachers or staff who try to break up the fight are in danger. Innocent kids who are standing around at their lockers are in danger.

Again, the issues is the violence in schools, not the phones.

Agree and the solution is 0 tolerance for violent behavior.

What does zero tolerance look like? Prison?

Expulsion. If that's not permitted, then they should make a law permitting it.

Expulsion of kids leading to what sort of outcome? More crime on the street? That doesn't help any of us.

What happens outside of school is not schools responsibility, it's not other students responsibility. Students who want to learn at school have the right to feel SAFE at school. At freaking school people!! This should be the safest place for a child to be.

THIS.

The drug use AT school is out of control. MCPS needs to do better for all our kids.

Sounds like a failing of the police department since it's their job to enforce drug laws.

Some people are under this mistaken impression that schools are magical places where the rule of law is suspended. Society already imposes consequences for both illegal drug use and violence. MCPS has no place dispensing justice.

Not when the kids are not caught. If there is nobody available to enforce the rules, the kids can break them without consequence. Which is exactly what is going on in our schools currently.

Kids can smoke weed (illegally) at school or distribute Percoset at school and know they won't get caught. So, yes, the rule of law is pretty much suspended.

Exactly. And now we have fentanyl.

Is MCPD not enforcing the laws at our schools?

No, Elrich won't let them. SJW MoCo council also doesn't want cops enforcing traffic laws on our roads.

https://wtop.com/montgomery-county/2023/03/montgomery-co-bill-would-prohibit-police-from-stopping-drivers-for-some-minor-traffic-offenses/

So you're saying schools are magical zones where laws aren't enforced? If someone hypothetically committed a major felony at MCPS, they can expect to walk? Elrich doesn't have the authority to do anything like this. MCPD is still responsible for enforcing laws throughout the county.

Unless MCPS calls the cops, the cops wouldn't know someone was murdered, just like when someone was shot, and MCPD didn't know that happened until staff at the school finally realized that it was a gunshot wound, and then called the cops.

Elrich pulled MCPD out of schools. If MCPD was in the school when the kid was shot, then they wouldn't have had to rely on MCPS staff to call them.

(I know you know this but are purposefully playing "I'm a stupid progressive, and it's the cops fault".)

The only magical thinking is in your head to think MCPS knows when someone is doing something illegal in schools.

I guess they could also just read DCUM since somehow it all shows up here.
