Racism is structural and it's more strongly present in some structures than in others. The cops are a racist structure from the get-go--the idea of modern policing originates in slave patrols. Putting police into a structure like a school, which also has a history of structural racism, is not a great idea...as we can see from all the school shootings in which SROs have cowered, fled, or otherwise been radically ineffective. |
You apparently don’t know that if you use a replica gun to rob or threaten someone it’s still a felony gun charge. |
That was a pretty bad press conference. The police chief was cracking jokes and the interim supt was playing politics. I honestly don’t feel reassured at all that under these people things will get better. In fact, it’s the kind of performance that makes me think it’s only going to get worse. |
| How about metal detectors? Are they problematic too? I don’t know why MCPS does not have them. |
We can all see the crime wave in inner city with less policing. As a minority, I would rather have cops in my neighborhood and keep it safe than let crime run wild. Many of the inner cities have African American mayors and many have African American police chief......yes, very racist! |
| In parallel to the discussion of "All police are racist", can we have a discussion of the race of the kids who are bringing guns to the school? Who is committing the crime? |
| None of this would have happened if MCPS had gone virtual this week. |
Now it’s “if only they’d been virtual this week?” After weeks of hearing “only 2 weeks of virtual after break” which of course would have had kids in school this week anyway. Don’t exploit this. |

So crazy. The shooter was sitting in a classroom on lockdown until he was arrested closer to 3pm…that’s two hours. Saw on Facebook that the police apprehended him in the classroom. That could’ve so easily become a shootout situation. Terrifying.
I’m glad my kids and I were blissfully unaware - my son was under the impression that the suspect was already in custody while we were texting between 1:15-3pm. We would’ve been in a panic. |
Yes, it’s crazy. But beyond that MCPS lied! They had a kid with a gun trying to hide in the school in a lockdown situation and their immediate reaction was to lie through their teeth. They sent an email to parents saying that a student had a health issue and that there was no threat, all the while the gunman is hiding out in the school. |
