My kids talk to me about this and asked for bc when they needed it.

DD #1 was in college (age 20 or 21) in serious relationship (now ended)
DD #2 was in college age 19, still in same relationship three years later
DD #3 in college not yet - had only one serious boyfriend in high school (sisters have confirmed that she has not yet)
DD #4 in high school not. yet

Both kids probably had sex in college. We did not ask. There was no one they introduced to us as a GF or BF ever. Both were magnet kids with very tough schedules. Both were also very popular and socially successful. Always had lots of friends of both sexes. And both travelled extensively in college with different groups of people.

I'm not judging because 1. I was having sex in 9th grade and 2. I preferred guys who were a year or two older than me but reading the explanation of your DS (my DS is about to turn 13) it sounds so young for a girl two years older to be interested (and having sex with). When I was 16 I was trying to date up not down in age. What is that dynamic like?

How old are you and how old are your kids?

I’m 35 and I didn’t tell my parents anything.

My brother is 19 and my sister is 18. Both of them tell their parents everything. Everything. Drugs. Sex. Drinking. Everything. My parents call me in horror all the time and I have to tell them, don’t worry, I did coke/had sex/passed out on a frat house lawn and all was well.

I don’t get it but these younger kids overshare like crazy.

"Sexual active" includes different forms of manual stimulation, like fingering or handjobs, dry humping or other genital-to-genital contact, rimming or other types of oral sex, and anal penetration.

Unfortunately yes I hear all of this. I have an open dialogue with my daughter but I have had to stress that some things are private. I’m glad she feels comfortable sharing some things with me so that she will stay safe, but I’m not her best friend either.

It was...tense. The kids were both 16 and had been dating for over a year. They were mature, good kids who got straight As. The mom found out because she found her daughter's pill pack. The mother was crying and devastated that her 'little girl' was having sex, and wanted me to 'discipline' ds. It turned out that the mother was extremely Christian and wanted her child to be 'pure' until marriage: ds had told me she was like 'Carrie's mother' before, but I thought he was exaggerating until this. When the mother realised I wasn't going to punish my child, she started texting my ds some crazy things, such as the accusation that he had been responsible for 'safeguarding' the girl's purity and had instead 'exploited her.'

After this, the mother of the girl gave her a 4 pm curfew and wouldn't allow her out on weekends, and banned her from speaking to ds, so the relationship fizzled out. Ds was devastated and humiliated.

Ds is now 23 and doing well in his graduate program, and happy with a new girlfriend we all love.

Wow. I feel bad for that girl and your son who had to go through this. They were two kids dating for a year, great students and geez wiz they had sex. It happens. Such a horrible way to be treated as a teen boy, in a consensual relationship, by your girlfriends parent! She sounds unhinged.
