Fed on Friday 2/12: open or closed?

Anonymous
If they are closed, it will be pathetic. What do you think other cities that typically get a ton of snow (Buffalo, Boston) do? They have streets that perhaps are not at full capacity for a few days, but people move on and don't have days on end off work. You use caution and build in extra time to get to work. And none of the non-fed offices in this area are going to be closed tomorrow. I know people who even went to work yesterday. Why should the feds be treated any differently?

The vast majority of the 200K + fed workers who work in DC use the metro to get to work. Most agencies downtown do not have parking for workers, so they use metrocheck benefits to get to work.

If metro is not operating its rails, the workers will not be able to get to work. Do you believe DC is equipped to offer parking to 200K feds who can't use metro tomorrow?

If metro is open, feds will be open.

Don't forget MARC and VRE

Well there's no reason Metro shouldn't be open by now.

true. but WMATA is sketchy always

I know it won't happen but could they just close for tomorrow. I would really appreciate it.

yes, please just make life easier for us all, and close. traffic will be gridlocked. not everyone takes mass transit.

Open. The govt is already catching crap from Fox for wasting taxpayer money with the closure. During a recession the feds won't want to look like moochers.

Also woudn't surprise me if they make people work on Monday and possibly another holiday.

15:50, it should surprise you if that happens, given that the director of OPM already said that isn't even a possibility. Holidays are holidays.

This is Federal News Radio's take on the circumstances:

Director of OPM was chatting on the Post today.
1) they wil not make people work monday or another holiday. Those days are set by statute. (Plus, this sort of thing is unprecedented. It's not like this is a recurring problem. The feds rarely close for weather.)

2) He is saying that the effects of teleworking are not accounted for in the current estimates of "wasted money." Lots of people teleworked this week, making the costs overstated.

3) Fox needs to get a grip. The government SHOULD have closed these past few days. There is no way to handle the people on the roads and roads were treacherous. Peoples lives are more important.

I just starting working as a Fed, beginning of the month, February. I don't have any leave accrued

Anyone who is getting their "news" from Fox is not very credible. Fox is all about drama and just looks for a way to spin every single event - even weather - into some political debate.

The region got over 50 inches of snow. The roads aren't great. Metro hasn't been functioning. Fox news needs to find something better to do with its time. There must be real news hapening somewhere in the world. Oh wait . . . fox news viewers don't care about real news.

They should just close. Let the cleanup crews continue their work without having to deal with as much people traffic. And let's all start fresh Tuesday like this never happened. What's so bad about that...can't we all get along?
