Idiot family wants 15/hr week nanny for 3 kids for $24/hr

And it sounds like their suggested schedule would mean the teacher would be with just one kid for most of the daily 3-hour session? Plus the real rate is $27/hr since they are adding $3/hr as a contribution toward health care or other benefits.

The biggest issue I see here is the expectation that the teacher will watch the infant at the same time. This just seems unrealistic and not really within the spirit of the arrangement they are seeking. I think the parents probably just recognize the baby will be sleeping a decent amount and are hoping the teacher would be okay having the baby sleep nearby so they can get the occasional break. It's hard to describe that in an ad like this and I think you would need it to be pretty clear up front what everyone is clear with.

But this sounds like a very specific and possibly beneficial set up for the right person. I don't think that rate sounds low UNLESS they are really expecting infant care and then it is both too low and also just an unrealistic position. But for 3 hrs/day of ECE for two pre-schoolers, one of which will be napping for most of the session? Seems okay.

I think you are reading the worst possible intentions here.

They specifically mention this will include the newborn who isn't even out of the womb yet. So yes, that automatically changes it to a nannying gig.

I agree but it’s $21+3

They're trying to shaft some poor naive recent grad who doesn't realize the tax implications, the healthcare costs, and the lack of benefits for this scenario.

After paying their insurance costs and commute costs (notice this nice family didn't mention that), they're taking in $8/hr if they're lucky.

Assholes.

Oh and we're just not going to pay you in October! Don't worry about that. Teehee.

+1 I don’t see what the big deal is. It’s a part-time job.

Yes, it’s ridiculous.

I’m not sure what the point of posting this is?

it's well-known that you have to pay part-time nannies more per hour than full-time, because they are in short supply. most childcare workers are going to be looking for FT right now. I can also say that we paid more to our part-time nanny on the hill for only one older child with no expectations of lesson planning/learning. so yeah, expecting this person to get only $24/hr for THREE kids ranging from newborn to 4 years old with educational expectations, seems like a lot.

Top that off with, you pay your own:
- Commute costs
- Taxes
- Healthcare insurance
- Housing
- Middle of your day tied up for no reason 5 days a week
- 1 month with zero pay

This is not a good contract.

Well, when no one qualified applies, they will have to lower their standards or up the salary.

But why call it out here? It’s low but it’s not so low worth mentioning here. I see all sorts of ridiculous ads and don’t post about “idiots” here.

Maybe parents will get wise and stop posting nonsense ads. You've had since March to realize that life had changed and no one with any financial sense wouldn't recognize that prices go up not down in a intense market.

$24/hr for 3 kids including a newborn is an insult. And I bet that au pair is tearing her hair out at the prospect poor girl.

Not surprising that people on DCUM don’t see anything wrong with the ad.

The October issue is absurd but $24 for 3 kids is reasonable. Its very young kids and they just need time to fill in with the AuPair as they don't want to spend time with their kids. People thinking Nannies/Teachers should get $30-40 an hour are ridiculous. It would be good for a recent grad looking for a job but needing money till they found a new job or a grad student looking for some money.

I'm appalled that they are sending their preschool age kids away for an entire month to "settle in" with a new baby.

I think that right there tells you all you need to know about what kind of people placed this ad.
