This coming year’s NNAT/CogAT

They could possibly offer tests by appointment at the school (but some wouldn't feel safe to enter the buildings, some families will be out of town, some won't be able to get to the school).
Then they would have to go by report cards, work samples, and GBRS. How is a teacher going to do GBRS for all distance learning?

That would be awesome for equity- only the parents who pay enough attention and act fast enough to grab spots get their kids tested - I wonder how that would play out

Uh, no. At our school, 3rd grade is heavily into PBL I don’t want my kid in that crap at all!

That is the dumbest idea. Kids who qualify for AAP this year deserve to get those services. The question is, where do they take the CogAT? I’ll sign up ASAP.

At least at our AAP center, they talk up how social science and science are learned through PBLs in AAP...

At ours (center school) there is a divide - they actually refer to 3rd grade gen ed as 3rd grade PBL. AAP didn’t do any PBL and it was absolute bliss! Just straight up good teaching with creative assignments. Kids were individually held accountable. My kid started AAP in 4th and LOVED it! We experienced one year of PBL and it was horrible.

I thought you could take it on your own at George Mason. Is it prohibitively expensive or something?

I don't think it is that expensive, but still it wouldn't be equitable if it costs money to take. Personally, we are able to take our kids for our own CogAT and WISC if needed, but county will have to come up with ways to make it equitable for everyone.

What's PBL?

Project Base Learning. I personally think it is great if used in CONJUNCTION with good old fashioned instruction.

NP-We got the letter that our kid qualified for gifted services the week before schools shut down. She'll be fine just like all the other future AAP/Gifted students will. I vote for saving the money from those tests and using it to mail our more materials for all students.

Of course since your kid is in you don’t care. No, I want the opportunity to have my kid found eligible too. In the correct year.

It depends on your situation. There are families that paying for the CogAT would be prohibitively expensive, not only finding the money for the test but the time to take the child to the test in terms of time off of work. Just because many people can afford doesn't mean that everyone can.

One of the recommendations from the equity report was that private testing not be allowed, like the WISC, because it is not something available to all and reinforces the socioeconomic gap that exists in AAP. And yes, that Socioeconomic gap is highly correlated with race.

no one is talking about THIS school year. They are talking about the rising second graders(taking Cogat) and rising 1st graders taking NNAT THIS year. The county will most likely have to delay these tests until NEXT year as you can not take them online at home. This AAP May be delayed a grade level AFTER this year. So this years second graders may start in 4th and who knows and possibly this years 1st grade start in 4th. It will be very hard for teachers to get a good grasp on children’s natural abilities with DL

You’re misunderstanding me. Kids who qualify this year (rising 2nd graders) deserve to start full time AAP in third grade. They shouldn’t have to wait a full year. I want my child to start AAP in third.
