Why is my beer gut so persistent?

what is visceral fat? I've read this board for a while now and have never heard that term.

You probably need more exercise now too. Getting rid of weight is HARD. Remember, 1lbs is about 3500 calories, so even if you cut 500 calories per day it can take one week just to lose 1 lbs. It can take quite a long time to lose 20 lbs. Slow steady progress OP.

This x100000. If you want a really cut physique, you have to eat less than you think and work out harder than you think. Keep going and expect to slog it out for 6 months before your body looks the way you hope. The good news is, every month it does get easier because your body gets used to eating less so your appetite will start to adjust. I went from being in okay shape to great shape and it took about a year before I stopped being hungry and I could eat based on appetite without counting calories. So even when I switched to maintenance it was still exactly like dieting until my appetite/hunger FINALLY adjusted. You can do this, your gut will go away, but LOLZ about the two months. Check back in 6 months.

Stopped drinking beer for about 2 months now, there are occasional hard liquor drinks, and when I mean occasional, it's far less than weekly. Granted I'm not getting as much exercise as before, I thought the calorie reduction and beer reduction would help me lose some of my beer gut. What am I doing wrong? Male 40s.

I am male and the same age as you and drink a lot more but have six pack abs. Unfortunately, there is no short cut. You need to keep going with the calorie deficit to lose the belly fat. I eat a lot but usually quite healthily. But I also do a huge amount of cardio and also do core and strength three or four times per week.

Google is your friend. Visceral fat is fat around your internal organs, as opposed to subcutaneous fat, which is the jiggly stuff near the surface that can be liposuctioned.

Also, you're male. Any 6 pack women over 35 care to "weigh" in?

Go carb free for 6 weeks. Lots of ab exercises (but no strength just reps). Light but rep lifting.

That will show some results, but really still going to be a slog.

Go on a no carb diet, restrict calories, count your calories, weigh your food on a food scale

Guarantee your belly fat will disappear in 4 weeks

I too have never heard of visceral fat. Had no idea there was fat around my internal organs.

This is what a lot of skinny Asian women who eat a lot but don't exercise have. It's probably why many skinny Asians have type 2 diabetes.

I am Asian, and used to be super skinny, but had elevated a1c, and I ate a lot of junk food without getting fat. Now I'm fatter but my a1c levels are good because I exercise more and eat healthier. I probably don't have as much visceral fat, but I do have subcutaneous fat (after two kids and being 50).

You can't do lipo on visceral fat, which is what a beer belly is.

+1 my DH has lost something like 50lbs. He's lean (and tall.. over 6'), BUT, he still has a bit of a gut. It's the visceral fat. There is hardly any fat I can grab on his gut, but he still has a bit of a paunch.

Persistent paunch can also be a result of anterior pelvic tilt. If I stand in front of a mirror and really focus on bringing my body into alignment, my stomach looks flat. But the moment I relax into my normal posture, my butt goes way out in one direction, and my belly rolls over in the front. Being disciplined about core exercises to correct the tilt can help.
