One or two players may be fully funded the rest are partial scholarships that are divided up across the top players on the roster.

And most players get no money.

Starters get some money, subs do not. "Most" is certainly defined by roster size.

So on a roster of 22 players at a Virginia Tech or JMU, a couple are on full rides, 8-10 are getting how much? 5-10K? And the other 10 are paying their way? Maybe a few more getting $ and more dollars at a bigger school (i.e. VT in this case).

Not necessarily. Each program handles things differently. Many reward their juniors and seniors that stick with the program. So taking the 14 scholarships they may escalate each year and offer 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% to 28 players based on their year. Or may do that for 20 players and give full rides to 4 and have 4 walk-ons with no money.

You can't really generalize from school to school. Some coaches try to give a larger number of kids some money, while others will give a few stars the bulk, parcel out the rest among the next tier, and then nothing for the remainder. And at least from what I've seen, the offers kids get are for percentage of tuition and other costs rather than dollar amounts, and can vary by year. So one kid might be on a 15% scholarship for 4 years, while another is on 25%, 25%, 50%, 50% etc.

Some top programs get smart and creative. UNC Chapel Hill brought on a dual sport athlete Claudia D as their goalkeeper. She is on the BB team, which is a headcount sport. So she gets a full ride from BB and costs the soccer team nothing in scholarship money. More money for the rest of the team.

This is not universally true. DA or ECNL will get your kids foot in the door but there are no entitlements beyond that just due to league affiliation.

This is the worst post I have ever seen.

Oh

That is for High School Soccer players. The odds for high level club soccer increase well above that. ECNL and DA level soccer players odds are much, much higher to play D1 scholarship or otherwise.

The High School soccer playing pool is much larger than the ECNL/DA player pool that most D1 programs recruit from.

Also, note this from the linked site: "The odds vary significantly depending on where you compete in High School. The odds of playing D1 are notably higher for players from the Mid-Atlantic states, but much lower for players in many other areas. The odds are especially low for states without NCAA I schools that sponsor men's and/or women's soccer."

A lot of posters on DCUM love to talk about how low the odds are of kids playing in college, and I've always thought it was strange given the significant number of kids--way above the national averages--I know (including D1 players receiving athletic scholarships) who do. I think those posters are looking at the national odds and not focusing on how much better the opportunities are for players in our area. We are fortunate both to have a strong soccer culture here, and tons of local colleges within easy driving distance.

In talking to parents about their kids playing "D1" over the past few years here is what I know... Only 1 or 2 kids will be on a full-ride. Even the kids who start every single game are not on a full scholarship. The rest are given partial scholarships which can be either athletic, academic or a combination. Most parents are pushing for the athletic ones because them it shows their kid is a good athlete but in reality the academic ones are sometimes better. Those don't always go away if your kid suffers a sport-ending injury or if they decide they want to join a sorority and have a normal college life instead of commit to what is a lot of work to play a sport at a D1 school.

I have a DA player going to a D1 school getting no scholarship money. We chose the school because it is strong academically. Could have gone to other D1 schools and gotten partial scholarships but realize the end game here.

Yeah, it's fairly common to play D1 and get no money. I know several kids in that situation as well, including ones who hit the coach's radar after all the scholarship dollars were already allocated for an incoming class. But two of my son's friends have ended up getting money for future years after strong performances as freshmen.

Most girls DA get money. Except UVA.. gotta be a rock star in state to get money. They spend their money on real impact players from TX, Cali, Michigan etc.
