Odds of a female HS player being on a D1 Roster (not even scholarship) 26-1. Oh
That is for High School Soccer players. The odds for high level club soccer increase well above that. ECNL and DA level soccer players odds are much, much higher to play D1 scholarship or otherwise. The High School soccer playing pool is much larger than the ECNL/DA player pool that most D1 programs recruit from.
Also, note this from the linked site: "The odds vary significantly depending on where you compete in High School. The odds of playing D1 are notably higher for players from the Mid-Atlantic states, but much lower for players in many other areas. The odds are especially low for states without NCAA I schools that sponsor men's and/or women's soccer." A lot of posters on DCUM love to talk about how low the odds are of kids playing in college, and I've always thought it was strange given the significant number of kids--way above the national averages--I know (including D1 players receiving athletic scholarships) who do. I think those posters are looking at the national odds and not focusing on how much better the opportunities are for players in our area. We are fortunate both to have a strong soccer culture here, and tons of local colleges within easy driving distance. In talking to parents about their kids playing "D1" over the past few years here is what I know... Only 1 or 2 kids will be on a full-ride. Even the kids who start every single game are not on a full scholarship. The rest are given partial scholarships which can be either athletic, academic or a combination. Most parents are pushing for the athletic ones because them it shows their kid is a good athlete but in reality the academic ones are sometimes better. Those don't always go away if your kid suffers a sport-ending injury or if they decide they want to join a sorority and have a normal college life instead of commit to what is a lot of work to play a sport at a D1 school.
