You could probably have no snack
I do a bit of running. But my main form of exercise is CrossFit. I do a 5.30am and never snack beforehand. In fact I never snack. You probably don’t need it. |
That many of us perform better with a little something in our stomachs. In my case, that and I can’t drink water on an empty stomach, but do need to have water during my workouts. Not everyone is the same. That’s okay. Lose the judgment. |
Lara bars. |
She did in a follow up post. |
Is this for a morning run? Evening? If it’s later in the day I don’t understand why this would be an issue. If it’s the morning, wake up 10 minutes earlier. I’m a runner who can’t run on an empty stomach but you can do better than some kind of bar that’s like empty calories.
I make organic tater tots in the air fryer before my long runs. I’m not an organic food freak but I accidentally bought this type of tots once, and they’re pretty low calorie (150 calories for 14 tots) and you get some carbs for fueling. |
why can't people just answer the question and give suggestions on non-perishable snacks OP can eat before a run? No one asked if these snacks were necessary or your opinion on snacking.
I'm a runner who does most morning runs on an empty stomach, but if i am running after work and haven't eaten since lunch a noon then I like to have a little something. I usually go for some easy to digest carbs and fat like an piece of toast or English muffin with some peanut butter, but that is perishable. Maybe some packaged peanut butter crackers? |
I'm a regular runner but have never tried peanut butter. What does it do for you? |
I'm the PP who asked the question and I did a quick google search. This is what I found and learned something new (thank you DCUM): For runners particularly, though, we love the fact that peanut butter makes us feel full a little longer due to the fat and protein content. ... The protein in peanut butter gives a boost to our muscle recovery process, and carbs are just basically really important to keep our bodies going. |
I do gu or a few chews with caffeine |
Also, I don't want to pick on you, but are you really running 7 miles a day? That's a lot! I hope you take some rest days and vary your distance/speed/terrain! |
I run 5-6 miles a day. I always run on a empty stomach. I would think snacking before a 7 miles run could create stomach issues.
For runs longer than 10 miles, gu or a spoonful of peanut butter is good. |
There’s no way I could tolerate Gu on an empty stomach. |
Makes you feel really good |
I can't run with much in my stomach--in the mornings I don't eat and in the afternoons I have a snack of whatever about 2 hours before. But for hiking, I like unsweetened applesauce or fruit/veggie blend pouches--they are smooth, somewhat hydrating, a good amount of sugar for a quick burst of energy but also some fiber and vitamins. You can make your own in reusable pouches for lower waste.
For protein while hiking, I like hard-boiled eggs, string cheese, or beef/turkey jerky. But I wouldn't want to run with these in my stomach. |
I think all you people who don't snack before running are the crazy ones. I run regularly and hate doing so on an empty stomach. If I need something non-perishable, sometimes I fuel with *gasp* a granola bar. Sorry if that offends all of your delicate nutritional sensibilities. |
