Entertaining adult nieces and nephews - normal?

Anonymous wrote:My three adult (28-31 yrs) nieces and nephews come over about once a month to hang out with my 18, 20 year old kids.
I do a special grocery shop but it's never enough. They stay for 12 hours which feels really long. They live an hour away.

When the three of them come, we go through 48 soda cans, 8 bags of chips, ice cream, fruit trays, cookies. I end up doing two full meals since they are here so long. I do salads, order four large pizzas for them along with wings and garlic bread. Then I order in Chinese for dinner. They will eat everything I put in front of them and it's a full time job keeping the food coming, lol.

I used to cook but it was way too much work. Last time I barbecued some burgers and they had THREE burgers in a sitting with buns and all the fixings plus sides.

Honestly, the visits are taking too much out of me. Are they extreme eaters? I feel bad even posting it but it seems they go hog wild when they are here.

Okay. something seems really off. 48 cans of soda for let's say all seven of you? So that's more than 6 cans per person? And a bag of chips per person? I assume you don't mean the little snack lunch size?

Buy a liter of soda and then it's water after that. Water from the sink.

Each of the adult siblings had three burgers each?

I'm just finding all of this really hard to believe.

Yes 48 cans.
I dont drink it and neither does my oldest.
If if wasn't absurd I would be posting about it.

Five of them drink soda. That would be 9 each. My DH and son dont have quite that much lol. But one soda and hour isnt impossible.

Why is a big bag of chips per person considered alot over 12 hours? I could do that in an hour.

The OP clarified that 2 of the 3 visiting cousins are obese. That kind of explains some of the extreme consumption of soda and food. It all sounds super unhealthy and gross--and a terrible influence for OP's kids.

"Hey guys, I was thinking of taco night for when you come next week. I'm going to provide X, Y, and Z. Jane, can you pick up a bag of chips and some salsa; Dan, can you bring a 6-pack of Corona; Blair, can you bring brownies or some other type of dessert? We can't wait to see you!"

I don't believe for one second that y'all go through 48 soda cans. That being said, if you only stock 12 soda cans, guess what? Only 12 would be consumed.

If you only make 2 burgers a person, and tell them that there are two burgers a person, guess how many burgers they'll eat?

Are you staying around for 12 hours? Don't do that. Say hello, hang out for a bit, then when they're in a groove with your kids, go run an errand or head upstairs to fold laundry or do whatever you want.

Or hand your kids $20 each and send them out to have dinner outside of the house.

Come on. Engineer things a bit. Are you this hapless and non-resourceful at work?

I guarantee you they do go through all that soda. Every time I hear the cans open I cringe. I was always raised to be a good host and to make sure everyone is full.

Well, dummy, then stop complainng. If you think good host = providing endless amounts of any conceivable thing, then welcome to your life, and stop complaining.

Like, it's hard to even try to talk sense with someone who stocks 48 sodas on the reg.

If I were hosting a pizza party for this group of grown-ass adult FREQUENT visitors, here's what it would look like:

I'm providing pizza, salad, and a normal amount of non-alcoholic drinks: like maybe 12 sodas, a bottle of sparkling water, and a pitcher of lemonade

My shiftless adult kids, who apparently live with mommy and daddy = beer run

Kevin = please bring a bottle of wine
Jane = please bring a dessert
John = please bring an appetizer

Either these grown adults are asked to contribute, and/or you stop stocking 48 sodas (insane), or you accept what is and stop complaining.

Um, OP doesn't have "kids" at home: She has adults at home. If they haven't figured out some good eating habits by now, I don't think cousins are the problem.

My one son is a workout Fanatic and he watched his food big time. The other one is average. I'm not worried.

Your adult kids live at home, and apparently haven't figured out that they need to pay for their own Chinese take-out. You should be worried.

Thats what DH says. It is the answer. I know. It's hard to change because they are accustomed to it.

You're a shitty parent and a shitty aunt if you haven't yet gotten comfortable with not meeting unreasonable expectations from your kids and nieces/nephews.
