There’s something psychologically demotivating to kids about being in school until mid-June. It’s like when that calendar moves from May to June, nothing else of substance gets done the rest of the school year and it’s mostly just killing time for 10-14 days. |
|
August 31. Can't stand that they are taking prime August vacation time from teachers and families.
Speak up to the school board if you care. |
they are getting "prime" June summer time in return. |
| Let me know when they release the SOL schedules. I’m waiting to see this before writing my school board rep and the at large ones. Can I? When does the SOL schedule come out vs when are they voting on the calendar? At least last year the SOLs were bumped up a week to correspond with starting a week earlier. I’d like to confirm it’s the same this year. |
| I'll take the extra time in June. The weather is nicer then it is in August. |
|
I've already emailed my school board rep about not starting until the 31st. I do not, and never will, support a mid-August or earlier start.

Are you all not aware that the board doesn't give a beep what we think? No matter the issue, the board doesn't really pay attention to the emails, surveys, etc. They will vote the way they want.
From what I gathered from earlier discussions, they have to reapply for the waiver to start before labor day? Is that for the calendar we are talking about or after that? |
You talk so definitively in your first paragraph, yet your second paragraph indicates you're not ever aware that the waiver system is going away. What a clueless windbag! Hahahaha! |
Thanks. You’re very kind.
I don’t pay much attention to these issues because it really doesn’t matter. The school board will do what they want and If we choose fcps then we follow the calendar. Not worth my energy....a lot of other issues can be fought if I was going to fight something. |

RE: the waiver that everybody loves to talk about, it's not going to matter at all in the years to come. The general assembly is most likely going to approve a measure to allow school districts to start when they want to start. The only condition for districts to choose their own start date is that they have to give the Friday off before Labor Day, to create a 4-day weekend.
Voila--no more waiver needed. |
Actually, those without current waivers could start up to two weeks before Labor Day. Those with waivers could chose to start earlier. That’s my understanding. |
The general assembly already passed it. The Gov has until March 26th to sign or veto it. I believe if he doesn't veto it, it becomes law anyway. Not 100% sure on the last point. But, I am sure that it has already passed the Gen. Assmb. It hasn't been signed yet, but I believe it is going to be b/c Northam was on board. |

There are four versions proposed, 1A, 1B, 2 and 3.
1A. Students report on Monday, August 24 (2 weeks prior to Labor Day). Staff reports on Thursday, August 13. Last day for students is Friday, June 11. Last day for teachers is Monday, June 14. 1B. Teachers start on Friday, August 14 and end on Tuesday, June 15. 2. Students begin on Monday, August 31st. Teachers begin on Friday, August 21st. Students end on Monday, June 21st. Teachers end on Tuesday, June 22nd. 3. Students begin on Monday, August 24. Teachers begin on Thursday, August 13. Students end on Monday, June 7. Teachers end on Tuesday, June 8. Wednesday before Thanksgiving is an 2-hour early release day. Three days are reduced from Winter Break. |
| Please, whatever the option, enough of the Thursday and Friday starts for teachers. Start us the Monday before the kids! I prefer the 8/31 start as I do not want to start mid August. |
