Realistically, how many pounds can I really hope to loose before Christmas?

why is Christmas your goal? Setting specific timelines on weight loss is never a good approach. Make better food choices, move your body and find something that will work for the long haul.

Whatever I wind up losing is going to be a Christmas present to myself. It sounds as though 10 pounds might be a bit of a stretch for me but I'm going to go for it all the same. If I only wind up losing 5 or 7 pounds that'll still be a nice thing that I've done for myself. And it'll be a good step towards getting fit for the vacation that I'm planning for myself in the spring .

Expectations are planned disappointment. Why not make it your goal to start eating healthy and exercising so you will already be on track come New Year's, and you won't have gained any more weight over the holidays? Making that your goal rather than a number on the scale puts your success totally in your control.

5-10 but if you eat terrible at Christmas you will easily gain 3-5 back

My goal is actually to take off some weight first and then start exercising. I actually enjoy exercising but I have found that it spikes my hunger and I wind up eating back my calories. I plan to concentrate on weight first and then when I get the first 15 or 20 pounds lost, I'll start exercising. Or such is the plan.

I am focusing now on improving my diet, eating healthier and creating a calorie deficit. I managed to get through Thanksgiving w/o doing too much damage.

Why wait? Start moving your body in some way every day now. Everything else is just delaying and making excuses. Start off with something easy and make it a habit.

Stop snacking between meals and eating or drinking calories after dinner.

This works for me. If I start an exercise regime beyond walking more than I usually do I become ravenous and blow the healthy eating. Best wishes to you! I personally have been doing low-carb and IF and am down 4 lbs since Thanksgiving morning. I know most of it is water weight but I’ll take it.

I've been walking more and my energy levels are up so I've been getting stuff done around the house. I am being more active, I just haven't hit the gym for a workout, yet.

I'm not snacking through meals or drinking calories except on the weekends at this point. I need to have something to pull when I hit a plateau.

I've been doing IF and low carb, too, and it seems to be working. I did indulge in stuffing, mashed potatoes, dessert and other goodies over Thanksgiving, including leftovers. But I tightened my diet right back up and I'm back on track. I initially had gained a couple of pounds but I've since taken them right back off.

I think it would be better for you to go slow. If you go too fast than you probably will gain it back and more before January is over. Let's face it...our bodies were designed not to starve and most people can't maintain a diet that requires you to lose 10 pounds in a month.

+1. Also it depends on what works best for you, for me, reaching my goal is important so I would set at 3-4 lbs and be happy to achieve it, rather than 10, struggle to lose 5-6 lbs and be disappointed that I didn’t reach my goal. I think you can aim anywhere between 0.5 -1 lb/ week (2.5-5 lbs total) to be more realistic and achievable.

Yay OP! Good job.
I'm also trying to lose weight by Christmas ... I haven't stepped on the scale, but a week in I can feel the difference in my body. My ribs are more obvious, my belly is smaller (although, still jiggly. I have great abs under there, but that mummy tummy skin just .... uggggg).
Anyway big thumbs up to you.

Thank you . Best of luck to you, too! Sounds like you are making some great progress. What a nice Christmas present we are giving to ourselves!

Keep going!
