| Agree that adding in more excercise to the total weekly hours is helpful. When I struggle with kids schedule, work or DH travel, I make sure to run 5 days at least 3 miles then do weights at home and / or some sort of hiit or barre type workout for my strength. My kids are old enough that they don’t bother me constantly so I am manage another 30 mins a day while I am also with them. They’re too little to be home on own also. This equates to two 30 minute strength training days, two barre or pilates days and one day for yoga. In addition to the running. I find it rather useful for stress relief. And the different types of exercise are easy to do at home and add plenty of variety. |
| I would do cardio for that 30 minutes at lunch, and then try to sneak in 10-15 minutes a day with some weight bearing exercises. There are a ton of videos on the market for that, so you can do them at home before the kids get up or after they go to bed. |
New Poster: may I ask what your body stats are (height/weight/ how satisfied you are with your level of fitness/ muscle definition..) asking because you are doing exactly what I plan on doing. I am doing a more limited version right now (let’s say half of your number of sessions on average), but want to change. I wasn’t sure if the program you describe and that I am aiming for was enough to get really toned and see a change in my body. (5’5 skinny fat myself) |
FFS, the OP said she can only fit in 4 workouts per week and your advice is that she should find a way to do 10? Cmon, that is not useful advice. And frankly most people with busy lives involving FT work and kids can't fit in 10 workouts every week. Bravo to you but please don't pretend that's a normal amount of time/effort for a parent who also has professional responsibilities to devote to exercise. |
| Highly recommend HIIT with strength training exercises! I have a similar lifestyle and I also workout during my lunch breaks. I like fitnessblender.com they have 100s of free workout videos and you can search by length of time, type of workout, level of difficulty, etc. They have some great HITT/Strength combo videos under 40 min. Good luck!! |

This is 21:10, Honestly was trying to help. I have limited time also and a full time very busy professional schedule wth 3 active children and a DH who travels. I do make fitness a priority. I add in wherever I can and add it to my weekly total. I found that making myself a priority meant often getting up earlier than entirely comfortable. But once you’re used to it, it is normal and I actually look forward to it. I work out of the home 5 days a week. On days I am not going to make it to the gym at lunch, I get up at 5 am and either run for 3 miles or do a HIIT, barre or pilates video. That takes 45 minutes tops. The days I do get an hour to go to the gym, I run then do weight training or yoga. I work out 7 days a week, I don’t find it difficult. It just needs to be done when the myriad of their things on my to-do list aren’t a priority. That all said, these things are videos I do AT home. Before my kids are up or my work has started. It doesn’t work for all.
For the pp that asked my stats, 5’8”,125-130 depending on time of month. Feel strong and healthy. Started all of this when I hit age 40 and almost 43 now. Definitely more toned and happier than I have been in a long time. Also- helps my running by adding in a ton of different types of excercise. |
Another vote for FitnessBlender.com Short and effective, especially the HIIT routines. |
| Um, I'd throw a parade, is what I'd do. |

Also...have you tried working out at home, even with the kids? I have three kids (8, 6, and 2), and, like you, try to get my work out in during the day. But if that's not possible, I put on a workout at home and just do as much as I can. Sometimes it doesn't work (!) but over time, my kids understand that Mommy needs a little exercise time. Popsugar Fitness is a great app that breaks up workouts into doable allotments - from 5 minute abs or arms to 10 minute cardio to a full 60 minute workout.
If it were me, I'd focus on running during your day workouts, and add in the weight-bearing stuff at home. |
