How to tell a child that she is not going to Ivy?

Anonymous
An Ivy is going to give tons of financial aid to someone making only $50k. Something is fishy here.

It sounds like the ex makes much more and/or has much more assets. If that's the case, you need to talk to the ex, and if he is refusing to support, you talk to the FA office.

My guess is OP wasn't separated when the initial FAFSA went in.

OP, you should call the school and explain that there has been a change in your situation.

well 50k is only Op's salary. We don't know the fathers. Which begs the question what is he planning to pay for his kid??

No, even if that's the case (which I do not believe), school will not consider that. FAFSA requires both parents assets - being separated has no bearing on FA amount.

OP is definitely a troll.

Right. Sounds like there's a battle happening, which puts OP's kid in a tough situation, since obviously tuition payments have to go out anyway.

But if dad refuses to cooperate and provide info, there is a contingency for that. I know this first-hand.

Yes, we filed FAFSA. The problem is that my husband made in 2016 unusual amount ($210), normally his income is around $120. We received $15 from the school, and $3,500 of that amount suppose to come from her working during the school (they will provide the job).

We just filed a reconsideration form a week ago, but I don't think they will change anything. There is a line of people to get to the school who are willing to pay full price.

They taking into consideration both parents income. Father is not planning to contribute.

People are so clueless.

Of course her H is putting her over the $100K, but even if he makes $50K and she makes $50K do you see you can't just magically come up with $60k ($30K) each... since $50K really means $35K, assume $3000/month to live that is $36K to just live and she is bringing home $35K.

It's pathetic what happens to the middle class.

Anyway, OP... I am in the same situation but what I told my child is 1 day at at time. We do have enough $ for the 1st year.

I got a $5K student loan, I am getting a part time job (watching a neighbor's child after school) that should make $10K in 1 year (under the table - go ahead and hate me). =$15K

My H is taking money from his retirement and will contribute $15K.

My child will get a $10K student loan

That is $40K. We have some savings so that will cover the other $60K.

But my child does not have a full ride to another institution, so ... I don't know.

So you (and your dh) made 260k in 2016 but usually make 170k? That's not 50K then.

What is husband willing to contribute to her education?

Sh*t Sherlock, That's not an excuse. You think people pay because they WANT to pay?
