Mundo Verde v. LAMB

Mundo Verde also has great results, but is primarily by and for upper class liberals, as evidenced by moving away from where DC's Hispanic population lives, while LAMB remains anchored in one of its community centers.

This is just the same tired racist argument that's been poisoning lamb for the last year. I only hear white people saying this. We have to stay in Ward 5 or else the Latinos will leave!

Give me a break.

Ward 4, my mistake.

OP - This is a real choice for us. Yes, we realize we are lucky.

Based on everything here and the links shared, we think Montessori is a better fit for our family.

Many thanks for the mostly kind responses.

Wow, amazing luck. I'd consider the commute as well, whichever Lamb campus as well as potential Lamb new location. Otherwise, talk to a parent or two at each school to get a sense of the difference and observe a class (if possible).

I have friends at both schools. LAMB seems much more stable (to be fair, LAMB has been around longer and should be more stable).

Can anyone comment? We love Montessori, but are torn as we don’t know where LAMB will be next year.

If location uncertainty is a deal breaker for you, choose MV.

If DCI uncertainty is. deal breaker for you, choose LAMB.

When does dci uncertainty kick in?

We have children in upper grades.

Thanks. We are really really torn.

I poked around a little & can't find great data, but anecdotally, not all the eligible MV families sent their kids to DCI, so if the uncertainty is only a medium concern, don't worry it too much.

We also had this (amazingly lucky) choice, went with MV (weren't sold on Montessori and the LAMB commute was going to be intense)--and we're really, really happy. Our kids have had great teachers, they're into the community, they like the Spanish. If you think your kid may have learning delays or need support, I've heard some stories that would give me pause about MV. But they've got early childhood stuff down, and our 2nd grader has had four good years with the school.

Good luck! You're unlikely to get it wrong, honestly.

There are a lot of MV families in Mt Pleasant (there is a bus that leaves from there) so some of those kids may go to Deal if that feeder continues. I also had the choice of MV and LAMB and chose MV. I've been very happy.

Parent of two MV students here.

First -- it pains me to say it, but I think if someone asked me this question in person today, I would recommend LAMB. We have loved a lot of things about MV -- esp. some great teachers and a great parent community -- but the Administration now seems checked out. Admins seem incapable of communicating with parents, whether as a group or individual. Bullying/behavior issues in the older grades are severe and administration does nothing. Teachers have started telling students that there is nothing they can do with disruptive disrespectful students b/c "school policy" does not allow any consequences for bad behavior.

But, I will defend the school against stupid racist statements like "it is for upper class white liberals". The school has a large Latino population and a diversity of income levels (across racial groups).

The teachers are great and there are some great staff. At this point, the school is experiencing what I would call growing pains and a lack of strategic vision. If the administration and board were focused and able to communicate with parents, those growing pains would likely be worked out. But, the administration has instead opted for a "siege" mentality and has locked themselves in the expansion bunker.

The biggest problem at the moment is complete lack of attention to classroom management and bullying and behavior issues.

Ironic that LAMB's biggest challenge is its administration as well. LAMB also has fantastic teachers. And LAMB fortunately does not seem to have widespread issues with bullying. But I think some frustrated LAMB parents might recommend MV in very similar terms - "we love the teachers and the school, but the administration and communication are liabilities."

I was just going to say the same thing. I am at MV and share the PP's concerns but LAMB has administrative challenges too and obviously completely mishandled the sexual abuse situation on a level that was shocking.
