Doesn't state how he managed to get hired when already having a record.

It's unclear whether he had "a record." The menacing charge was a misdemeanor and I don't think those are included in the application form.

They SHOULD be, and it seems clear to me that he would have been in much more legal trouble had he not been a NYPD officer at the time, but if we assume that misdemeanor was his only offense, I can see why MCPS didn't pick it up in a background check.

And we don't even know if he was convicted...

Arrests show up in background checks.

I don't buy that. I'm a landlord and when I get a new tenant, the service I use for credit checks includes a criminal check for free. Last time around, it showed the applicant had a misdemeanor drunk in public charge.

If I as a regular citizen paying $30 can get that much detail, surely MCPS can get that much.

Besides, why didn't they just type the guy's name into Google? The source is reliable -- New York Times.

I agree. A Google search is a pretty bare minimum, and I will take your work for it that misdemeanors turn up on background checks. I have a very low impression of the NYPD to begin with, though, so I'm wondering if this particular charge disappeared in the system somehow. Still, you are right that they should have caught it. I'd Supt. Smith to address whether the NEW protocols would have caught this particular offender.

Unclear. It sounds like the letter to the school community came first, then the MCPD announcement, then the MCPS announcement.

I have a child there and have no emails..

FWIW, I have a child there and got "Urgent and Important Message - A message from RICHARD MONTGOMERY HIGH SCHOOL Dear Parents/Guardians" in my email at 9:22 am today.

Sounds like he was arrested today, so that's pretty prompt.

Odd I looked again and have nothing...aside from the email from the PTA indicating that the principal was not taking parent calls. Glad to know something went out to someone at least.

Perhaps he was "good buddies" with Jack Smith, so he got a free pass to have sex with any kid he wanted.

What?? We're in the Rockville cluster, not RM, but WTF?? Really, what is up with MCPS. This is all just ridiculous.

He was the girls varsity basketball coach there for two seasons. Nice.

Shit. More victims. Yes, for sure.

You have to wonder about the hiring practices. How could they not have asked why he was leaving NYPD?

So glad the Montgomery County Council is considering airport type security at their building and providing the JCC with $225,000 for their security yet..........

Glad to see they are taking the safety of the students seriously. But hey, they are reviewing things.....

Demand an *independent* security audit of each school and its staff of every level.

It's ludicrous. Who actually hired this man? That person really needs to be fired. There is no excuse not to have Googled the name. There is no way his record should have gone unnoticed.

MCPS is sounding like the Catholic Church. A safe haven for pedophiles who have trouble fitting in elsewhere.

Haven't read many of the replies but this guy has a history. A quick Google search shows that this guy is pretty troubled, yet MCPS still hired him!

Exactly! They probably knew his history and welcomed him with open arms. The kids are their prey.

God only knows how many other people knew (or AT LEAST) suspected) this was going on, but said nothing.

Shame on them.
