BINGO |
Seems like the goal of those in power now. |
So the kids should go hungry? Bullshit. This is a great program. I am delighted to see my tax dollars supporting this. |

Have any of you been to Hybla Valley?
It is really, shockingly poor. It makes Bailey's Crossroads look like McLean. I think that this would be a better idea if they included a morning reading/English language improvement/math camp all morning for kids coming for the free lunches. It is nice that they are feeding them but free food is doing nothing to help these kids break they cycle of poverty. They need beyond basic skills in English. We do them a great disservice by not requiring the students to have full immersion in English, especially the youngest students who are able to learn oanguage quickly and easily. |

First, FCPS sponsors the program-- that is, they provide the food service facilities because they are there and not in use. They do not spend FCPS funds. This is paid for by the USDA.
Second, they feed everyone, because the programs are only in very high FARMS areas. These are Title I schools that do not require paperwork and feed all kids for free during the school year to, brcause the administrative costs of dealing with all the paperwork outweigh the costs of feeding the kids who aren't eligible. Third, SNAP benefits were slashed this year. The money is not there for many families to feed kids lunch when the normally get it for free during the school year. And lastly, I bet some of ya'll call yourselves Christisn too? |
I'm a Christian who believes school funds and sponsorships should go toward education. Do you feel nice and sanctimonious for bringing up Christianity? I bet you do. |
| OP posted this knowing it would cause this firestorm. Good job of trolling OP (how many people on DCUM would really need this information?) |
You're a sad excuse for a Christian. Jesus is ashamed of you. |
Agree. The county does have a camp called Rec-Pac which is in many schools. It is an inexpensive sliding fee camp and slides pretty far down. Many of these kids would never have any camp experience or any socializing in English during the summer without it. It is mostly recreational/crafts, but these things are much better than kids sitting at home alone! We used to have summer school for kids, but it got cut out years ago (sadly). Giving kids a meal is pretty basic. Who is going to defend and lead this country if people are weakened by poor nutrition? Who will pay for their health care? This is money very well spent. I only wish we could still have summer school for these kids. I encourage anyone on here to donate to Rec-Pac (through Fairfax County Parks and Rec Dept.) so that more kids can attend those camps (that are in the schools). It's not perfect, but it's something. When you invest in children, you are investing in the future! The parents of these kids are appreciative of what is being done. They want more for their children, but cannot provide it. What kind of a country do you want? Think about it on the fourth of July. It's more than Christian; it's common sense. |
Reread the post. She said that school funds are not paying for this program. So you can calm down and aim your ire eleswhere. |
My kids went to a Title I school (not one on this FEEDS list) and the ESOL kids who came into their classes were fully immersed, at least in the earlier grades. I think they actually do a really good job with it (and it did not detract from the overall dynamic of the classroom at all, we really liked the school). It was a shame when they did away with the modified calendar because it really helped the kids with retention. Complaining about tax money being used to feed poor kids one meal per day is really just disgusting, as is the assumption that people actually prefer government assistance to trying to raise themselves out of poverty. I hope you all stay away from the polls in November. |
OP here. I didn't post to "cause a firestorm". I know I can't prove that to you and you will think what you want, but it wasn't meant as a troll post. |
Same here. The alternative is that the kids will go hungry, because the SNAP benefits don't usually go far enough which is why the kids get free breakfast/lunch during the school year. And yes, some non-needy kids will attend if they're in the area but let's not forget there are a lot of people who don't qualify for assistance and aren't "needy" who really can't afford to feed their kids. Then HHI limit for a household of 4 for SNAP is like $30,000. Someone making $35,000 may not qualify for assistance but they sure aren't rolling with it. If a few truly "rich" kids eat there too - SO WHAT? |
This isn't actually true for all the schools re: free lunches during the school year (some maybe, but some of them do require paperwork and are around 50% FARMS.) Nonetheless, I agree with everything else you posted. |
| So by this premise should all kids receive "free" food throughout the school year? That way nobody is missed. What about schools where breakfast isn't served at all? |
