Have any of you been to Hybla Valley? It is really, shockingly poor. It makes Bailey's Crossroads look like McLean. I think that this would be a better idea if they included a morning reading/English language improvement/math camp all morning for kids coming for the free lunches. It is nice that they are feeding them but free food is doing nothing to help these kids break they cycle of poverty. They need beyond basic skills in English. We do them a great disservice by not requiring the students to have full immersion in English, especially the youngest students who are able to learn oanguage quickly and easily.
Agree. The county does have a camp called Rec-Pac which is in many schools. It is an inexpensive sliding fee camp and slides pretty far down. Many of these kids would never have any camp experience or any socializing in English during the summer without it. It is mostly recreational/crafts, but these things are much better than kids sitting at home alone! We used to have summer school for kids, but it got cut out years ago (sadly). Giving kids a meal is pretty basic. Who is going to defend and lead this country if people are weakened by poor nutrition? Who will pay for their health care? This is money very well spent. I only wish we could still have summer school for these kids. I encourage anyone on here to donate to Rec-Pac (through Fairfax County Parks and Rec Dept.) so that more kids can attend those camps (that are in the schools). It's not perfect, but it's something. When you invest in children, you are investing in the future! The parents of these kids are appreciative of what is being done. They want more for their children, but cannot provide it. What kind of a country do you want? Think about it on the fourth of July. It's more than Christian; it's common sense.
