Of course not. But, there will be plenty of kids who do not need the assistance that will take advantage of the program. As a side note - as a young teacher, my husband and I struggled to make ends meet in the DC area. We pinched pennies, worked hard, I took on summer jobs - it was tough. I had students who were getting free lunch who had nicer clothes, very expensive shoes (brand name tennis shoes - think Michael Jordan), the newest electronic games, etc. These were items that their parents bought them (the kids were proud of the fact that their parents got them pretty much everything they wanted). It was experiences like this that made me start to question our nation’s effort to assist those who are in need. |
I understand. You need to come and see the suburban and rural poor (immigrant poor do not wear expensive clothing). The programs are not perfect, but they help lots of kids who need help. |
You sound very bitter. Also, it isn't taking advantage if it is FOR EVERYONE |

Veteran teacher here. Sometimes the kids are not getting the things they need. Sometimes a few expensive items are bought to try to make up for what they don't have (which is often an absent parent or not spending time with the child). Children, unfortunately, might have these material wants taken care of, but their physical and emotional needs are not taken care of. Parents, unfortunately, do not exercise good judgement . . . they don't know how to parent. This is the true poverty. This is not the fault of the child. Also, you and your husband were on a ladder up. You should be grateful. |

I am a FFX Cty taxpayer who is thankful to OP for letting me know this program exists. We support a disproportionate amount of illegals in this county and I'm sick of the ever-rising taxes as a result. |

1) Move. 2) Try to be smarter and learn about your county from sources other than DCUM. |
Not the PP, but how would moving help? The program is paid for by the USDA. Does the USDA get its money from federal taxes? |
1) Plan to. Husband's a liberal and complains about the taxes, but of course has no intellectual understanding of WHY his taxes are so high... 2) I know my county supports illegals on my dime BECAUSE of other sources, NOT because of DCUM. |
SHHHHH, no logic allowed... |
Exactly, hunger is a motivator. |
Now there's something you don't read/hear everyday. Interesting opinion on taxes, because I feel my taxes here (compared to where I've lived in PA and Ohio) are relatively low. |
That's ridiculous. Kids aren't going to go out of their way to get a free and probably subpar lunch when they aren't at least somewhat food insecure in most cases. If there's good food at home, they'll eat that. |
What, a 10 year old kid is going to be motivated to do what? Be a lookout for a drug dealer on the street? I don't think they let 10 year olds work at McDonald's. |
