Which Mclean elementary school is best for average and gifted siblings?

Anonymous
Look in Franklin Park (new homes) zoned for chesterbrook.

Its the best option for your mixed kids. Local aap for the gifted and regular classes for the average.

Franklin Sherman would mean your gifted kid would go to a center while your average kids stayed at FS

Benefit is FS is smaller than the rest

But in your situation Chesterbrook is best option (especially due to housing stock that you prefer). Haycock would also have gifted and non gifted classes but housing stock isnt what you prefer (unless you get a single lot tear down that was rebuilt)

With Franklin Park the majority of houses are new /rebuilt so more choice.

Chestebrook / Chain Bridge Forest (the part in mclean) might also work (its also chesterbrook)

Franklin Sherman has LLIV now, but it's relatively recent, so most AAP kids there are still going to Haycock.

Is anyone else tired of these threads trying to pick out the best Mclean Elementary? There are no differences with any of these schools.

Of course there are differences, they are not clones of each other. Each has its own flavor or personality.

OP here. We are relatively new to the DC area. It's so hard to research the qualitative of the schools. The people we know in Mclean either send their kids to private school or have kids in preschool.

We want to raise down to earth children. Prefer a school that is not too competitive in elementary school. At the same time, would like both kids challenged. Do not want to general ed child to feel bad about not being in AAP while attending the same school as sibling. I like new houses and DH needs to be able to get to DC via Chain Bridge Rd.

OP here. DH and I come from humble beginnings. We have a high HHI now though. I prefer some economic and racial diversity so I think we would like to be in the Mclean High pyramid. From my research, the type of housing we prefer (newer houses in cul de sacs) seem to feed into Langley.

I think you will find what you want in the Chesterbrook (McLean) district. They have the proximity to Chain Bridge. They have housing stock in your price range (Franklin Forest would be where I would look first and then Chesterbrook Woods). The way the administration handles AAP is closer to what you want. AAP is only the four core subjects (Math, science, social studies and language arts). Student are mixed in homeroom and for all other subjects (eg PE, music S, art...). They move between the grade teachers for each subject. Some kids are AAP for all subjects, others are AAP for 1-3 subjects. When my son was there, he was in AAP for two, gen-Ed for one and pull out special Ed for another (he has a profound LD in 6th grade, it was not a pull out but a team taught class). It is much more fluid and inclusive than Center AAP schools that tend to segregate the AAP students and Gen-Ed students for the entire day.

You should check out McLean Hamlet. But pricey but very nice, feeds into a top school pyramid. Cul de Sacs and neighborhood feel with sidewalks and good family-oriented community.

Nice of you to label your children "average" and "smart." I'm sure they appreciate that.

I doubt OP calls her kids that in front of them. It's refreshing to see a parent who is realistic about their kids' academic aptitude, and is trying to find the best fit for both kids. OP, everyone in FCPS is gifted, or at least that's what the parents think. Everyone also deserves a trophy for everything.

I went to Franklin Sherman, my sibling went to Haycock (she's brilliant, I'm just normal smart) and it was not an issue at all. Then she went on to TJ and I went to McLean. Again, not an issue at all. I adore her in all her nerd-dom and I like that I'm normal .

There are posters on DCUM who will bad-mouth McLean and then, if a poster reiterates his or her interest, start to attack the poster personally. I'm sure OP loves her kids and is just looking for the best fit for her family.

Is there a way I can search for real estate feeding into a school?

I tried via greatschools but it takes me to zillow and uses the 22101 zip code and pretty much all of mclean seems to come up.

Having a hard time searching for these specific neighborhoods.

This house seems really cheap for a newer home. Is there something wrong with it? We would not even have to take out a mortgage if we bought a house like this.
