This wouldn't happen in MoCo because Yom Kippur is a holiday. |
| What time is BTSN? Doesn't Yom Kippur end at sundown? |
|
Trying to make something of nothing. Skip it if you need. Its starts after sundown, though. Not really an issue
|
After fasting all day, most people are exhausted and need a meal rather than racing to a school. |
Back to school night is 7:00; Sundown is 7:06 that day. But, the definition of the end of the holiday is nightfall (not sunset). That is at 7:44 PM. That is when the fast ends. Note that I can not fast (diabetic), but I will be observing the holy day. So, there is a clear conflict. |
It does not start after night fall. It starts 45 minutes before nightfall. I have never missed BTSN yet. |
| I'm not Jewish (cradle Catholic), but as a religious person, teacher and parent, this pisses me off. Someone should have consulted a calendar. |
Np here. Even if op doesn't fast, the "break the fast" meal is generally part of the holiday and many people gather with family or friends for it. |
Nah, it's Virginia. Grew up here and Jewish holidays never get consideration in school calendars. |
Then it will get changed. I'm sure the reason this happened is because they didn't realize it was a jewish holiday. Did they say they aren't changing it so you decided to post here? If you were told they won't change it, go up the chain. Posting here does nothing constructive. |

Yom Kippur is a very holy holiday. September 23, 2016 is not only Yom Kippur, but also Eid-al-Adha.
Fort Belvoir ES grades 3-6 and Timber Lane ES will also have their BTSN that night. |

Didn't someone post this last year or something for maryland?
They can't accommodate every tom dick and harry's holidays. If you are so concerned get on the PTA and start a and coordinate dates. Let me guess, you are too busy.... |
| I'm confident the schools will change it. They probably had a calendar that indicated it was the day before--since that is when it starts. They should have checked, though. |
No they won't |
No. It ends when the first star appears and then there is still a small additional service before a person is truly done (and then you really do have to eat before you are fit for a meeting). As for the OP: Yes, this is a bummer. BTSN isn't very useful, anyway. I would send an email to the child's teacher/s a week before, explain why you will be out and asking her/him to share any handouts with you electronically and open up the opportunity for a meeting on a different day if there are things to discuss. Every year some school does something disrespectful to at least one religion. I've gotten tired of it, and now just do things like the above. |
