I'm truly confused. In the article it said many women choose to have the school investigate their claim rather than law enforcement because the law won't take the claims seriously if drugs or alcohol are involved. Shouldn't it be against the law if the school doesn't report a claim of rape on its campus to the authorities? How can this not be the case? Can anyone explain why this is?

Why can men binge drink without getting raped but women can't?

They can, it's just much, much less frequent.

(short version: more than 20% of college nationwide letter athletic departments oversee sexual assault claims against student-athletes).

My kid is much younger, but I'm wondering how you all talk to your college aged kids about how to stay safe in social situation, sexual ethics, etc.

The above link is important.

If you walk around wearing expensive jewelry in a high crime area, and someone steps up to you, knocks you over the head and robs you, you are indeed stupid, and you probably won't recall what happened to you. It doesn't make the robbery any less of a crime.

There was no proof this girl was raped.

In the NYTimes article, the rape kit and examination showed evidence of penetration in at least two places. If a woman is too intoxicated to remember this event, she was too intoxicated to consent, and any law-abiding person would know that.

There was extensive physical evidence that she was raped, actually. It was not part of the university hearing, because the university did not actually take any of this seriously. I bet they're probably taking it pretty seriously now.

First PP, you're scum.

Also, there were eye witnesses which is pretty rare. And she texted her friends that she was afraid.

Please look inside yourself and think about why you feel so strongly that the girl was responsible here. The NYT described an 18-year-old freshman who was given a lot of alcohol by older, more experienced upperclassmen who then bent her over a pool table and raped her anally in front of other students. Why don't you have anything to say about their behavior? Why were they not responsible for ensuring that she was able to consent? Why did they think it was OK to physically abuse and publicly humiliate a younger woman (by having sex with her in front of others who were laughing and filming it), even if she "consented"? Why did they think it was OK for multiple men to serially have sex with a woman they didn't even know?

Oh.

It just dawned on me.

You were that guy in college.

+1 ANYONE who would send their child (especially daughter) to this school is nuts.

This is an area where parents of girls need to have heightened concern - and don't judge me as sexist, but this is reality. Girls face a danger that boys just don't face.

I sure wouldn't want my son to choose one of the big Greek life schools, but I would absolutely prohibit my daughter from doing so.

Even if you aren't Catholic, many Catholic schools have no Greek life and offer a comparatively safe environment for your DD. Additionally, some schools are ahead of the curve are have eliminated Greek life altogether.

If you are drunk and give the expensive jewelry to a homeless person because you feel bad for him in your drunk state and the next morning you don't remember it ... that does not mean the homeless person stole from you.

So, if someone comes up to you and says "I was robbed last night," your response is going to be "are you sure you didn't get drunk and give your cash to a homeless person?"
