Drink water before your meals, distract yourself with movie/book/etc after the meal and go to sleep earlier. I suffer from post-dinner sweet tooth as well, and I've noticed that if I apply these rules, I do better. |
| I understand! I decided to swear off ice cream and simply not eat it again. No moderation, just No Ice Cream, because that was my biggest evening weakness. So instead I have a cup of cinnamon apple spice tea and some dark chocolate, as others have said. It scratches the sweet itch. |
| I'm a fan of eating sugar cereal at night. Satisfies the sweet tooth or chocolate craving, you get the calcium from the milk, and it is far lower in calories and fat than ice cream. |
| Another possibility is to keep some 0-50 calorie sweets in the house as a "secret stash" to give yourself something when you feel the urge. Make allowances earlier in the day to accommodate the 50 calories. Things like the 0 calorie sparking lemonades. Here's a list of possible snacks: http://www.womansday.com/health-fitness/diet-weight-loss/50-Best-Snacks-Under-50-Calories If you need, drink a tall glass of water and then have one of these. See if that takes the edge off the sweet tooth urge. |
| Do your nails or put on a tooth whitening strip at 8 pm. My daughter's college roommate did this and lost 30 lbs in one semester (albeit at 11 pm not 8). |
Me too. (Im the one who started the what didyou eat today post and just sucked down 2 cups of Goldfish crackers) This is me every night. I am so good during the day and after 8 pm all bets are off. |
You need to eat more during the day. Your body wants more nutrition. |
| for me it's keeping busier a little later in the day. Sitting down on the couch to veg and watch tv are huge triggers for over-eating. SO i sit outside and read or do some gardening. and other days I sit on the couch and watch a movie..and yes..over-eat. I try not to beat myself up over it. take small steps and you will do a lot better. don't berate yourself for having an off day. |

OP, what are you eating for dinner? If you're hungry later, it seems like you may not be getting enough fat. Try upping the fat content of your evening meal.
And if your dinner contains rice or bread, skip it. Let the focus be fat, protein, and veggies. This is super satiating and there will be no insulin surge that leads to hunger later. |
| I have the same problem, can stick to a diet or healthy food all.day.long, even at dinner, then 10pm or 11pm I get out of bed and eat ice cream or cheese crackers. I hate that I do it and am trying to stop :/ Have hit a plateau for months now with my weight loss, even walking up to 6 miles a day and working out. Ugh. I know if I could stop the damn night eating I'd lose more weight. |
| Figure out what need you're really to feed. Then feed it, without food. Are you bored, lonely, not getting enough attention from spouse, stressed, anxious...etc.? Figure it out and handle it accordingly, and the food problem diminishes greatly. |
|
how many calories are you eating up to that point?
is it hunger or pyschological or both? find another treat that is lower in calories and that you are able to stop at the appropriate amount. Hot cocoa might be good. |
| Are you drinking in the evenings?? When I have a glass or two of wine I tend to much throughout the night. |
Stop buying ice cream and cheese crackers. Most grocery stores are closed at 10 or 11 and you're not going to feel like getting dressed to go to one at that time, increasing the barrier and making it easier for you not to indulge. |
This is good advice. As nuts as it sounds, when I had a similar habit of gorging on treats, I would add to my grocery list a "do not buy" list. It was a good visual reminder of my goal and made it easier to say no to the inner voice convincing me that everyone deserves a little ice cream and so on. It didn't solve everything, but snacking on frozen fruit didn't pack such a huge calorie punch. |
