I suspect he's cheating. I haven't been able to verify it so I don't want to accuse him without proof. He's very withdrawn from me and anti social unless he's with his friends. He's very good at pretending in social settings

No, I am really stuck on next steps. Part of me says hire a PI and either get proof of affair, if any, or forget the suspicion.

I don't remember who initiated, but I think August was last time, and it was 2-3 months before that. He initiates most times, sometimes I do too.
